Dominique Vivant, baron Denon est né à Givry le 4 janvier 1747. Il se fait connaître pour son esprit et ses talents de causeur et se voit nommé directeur d'ambassade à Saint-Pétersbourg. Son œuvre graphique prend de l'ampleur. On compte aujourd'hui six cent planches de gravures signées de sa main et quatre cent croquis. Au retour de la campagne, il est nommé directeur général du Muséum central des arts par le premier Consul, il est également administrateur des arts. En 1814, Louis XV le confirme à la tête du musée qui est, entre temps, devenu le Musée Royal du Louvre. Il en garde la direction jusqu'en novembre 1815. Grand précurseur de la muséologie, de l'histoire de l'art et de l'égyptologie, le baron Denon meurt à Paris le 27 Avril 1825.
