What’s it like to be inside the exploding COVID-19 pandemic as the Chief Executive Officer of one of the largest health care systems in West Michigan? Dr. Peter Hahn graciously took time to share what Metro Health | University of Michigan Health has done to prepare for potentially a large surge of patients suffering from coronavirus in our community as well as what we can ALL do to keep our community healthier and safer.

As a time stamp for this episode, it was recorded on Friday, March 20 at 2pm just as Governor Whitmer was making sweeping executive orders that impacted how hospital systems are required to operate across the state in light of COVID-19. Our conversation was conducted as facts and new information were constantly evolving.

Adam Cayton-Holland is an American writer and fantastic comedian who might be best known as his character Loren Payton on the TruTV series “Those Who Can’t.” The show inspired a serious cult following and enjoyed three critically acclaimed seasons that co-starred Adam’s The Grawlix partners Andrew Orvedahl and Ben Roy. The series also spotlighted frequent guest stars Patton Oswalt, Rory Scovel and the Sklar Brothers.

But “Those Who Can’t” was green lit at exactly the worst time in Adam’s entire life. Adam was feeling the tremendous high of having his dreams fulfilled of working on his very own television show at the very same time that he was struggling with the devastation and grief he felt after his beloved younger sister Lydia committed suicide.

This emotional conflict led Adam on a journey of healing and therapy which resulted in his book, “Tragedy Plus Time,” a darkly funny memoir and tribute to his sister.

Adam consistently tours the country as a stand-up. He also has a one-man show called, “Happy Place” which is about his grief journey and his sister Lydia.

Stage Actor & Dancer - Hamilton

Mikey Winslow just wrapped performing in the smash hit production run of Hamilton staged in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Before he left town, I was able to sit down with this East Grand Rapids native and veteran of Broadway and talk about his life and career. Amazingly, Mikey’s career nearly ended two years ago after his hip became too painful to continue professionally. Miraculously, after hip replacement surgery and physical rehab, he’s as good as ever and pain free.

Mikey and I discuss the phenomenon that is Hamilton, his drive drive to succeed, the incredible demands on his body and also his tremendous excitement about being cast in the newly announced production run of Hamilton in Los Angeles that will spend most of 2020

Let’s just say Mikey is living an inspired life…let’s do it!

World Renowned Graffiti Artist

Antonio “Shades” Agee is a Detroit legend and one of the city’s first recognized artists working in graffiti. He’s now world renowned and enjoys commissions by some of the world’s largest corporations. Companies like Fiat, Chrysler, Ford, Toyota, and major organizations like Universal Studios, FIFA World Cup, Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Pandora, and Vitamin Water all work with Shades.

There is no doubt that Shades is a legend. He battled alcohol and drug addiction and eventually used graffiti to soar above the ashes and ruins that he’d made of his life as a young man…much like a Phoenix rising that is the City of Detroit today.

Shades is one of the hardest working artists I’ve ever known. He’s also one of my best friends in Detroit. This is a raw and unvarnished conversation with Shades about his chaotic life and career.

Rick arrived at my studio with a black eye. So…as one does in this type of situation, I asked him what happened. But then I selfishly thought better of it and said, “Wait. Save it for the podcast.”

Turns out, as you will hear, a few days earlier Rick had “gotten his ass kicked” in a violent altercation at 2:30AM near the downtown dumpster where he was throwing away roughly $700,000 worth of his own paintings and sketches that he had just destroyed with a razor blade and a table saw.

Suffice it say Rick and I have an awful lot to unpack in this episode.

I’ve known Rick Beerhorst for a long time. He is one of the most talented painters that Michigan has ever produced. He’s also complicated and a survivor. He’s battled through periods of intense poverty, depression and mania. His 29 year marriage dissolved a few years ago. And now, after a period of intense self-reflection and meditation, Rick has fully re-dedicated himself to his art and career. Shortly after we shot this episode, Rick embarked for Europe and is now living in Paris where he is painting, reading and writing.

“I’m the biggest ambassador for Michigan because I love it so much.”

- Carter Oosterhouse on his hometown of Traverse City

A native of Traverse City, Michigan, Carter Oosterhouse first came to fame as a carpenter on HGTV’s Trading Spaces during the explosion of many popular DIY home renovation shows. Carter has parlayed his success into more television shows, some of which he now owns and produces. He’s also authored books and builds playgrounds across the county with his non-profit called Carter’s Kids. He’s also invested heavily back into his home town with the launch of Bonobo Winery on Old Mission Point in Traverse City a few years ago.

I first met Carter six years ago when I was asked to create portraits of him for an advertising campaign. We’d stayed in touch off and on since then, and when I asked him to be a guest on the podcast while I was out in Los Angeles, he mentioned that we could shoot at his home in Malibu. Let’s just say we jumped at the chance. Carter’s home with ocean views from atop a canyon ridge is truly a magical place to shoot some portraits and have a conversation (see photo gallery below).

Carter and his wife Amy Smart keep deep ties back in Michigan where they keep a home in Traverse City. Together they founded Smarthouse Collections, a company that is dedicated to more eco-friendly bedding products.

“I feel magic is a common thread to show various layers of humanity.”

- Justin Willman on his Netflix show “Magic For Humans”

Justin Willman is a magician, comedian and actor. Season two of Justin's very popular Netflix show “Magic For Humans” has just been released, with season three already slated to release in 2020. This is good news for fans of Justin’s unique approach to street magic and comedy. I’m not gassing up “Magic For Humans" one bit…it’s a fantastic show and you should check it out.

I first met Justin Willman in 2012 when he came to Grand Rapids to perform for the Laughfest Comedy Festival and I was the festival photographer. We had a very quick and easy photo shoot. We both really liked the results. Justin came back to Laughfest again in 2015. We shot more portraits and we liked them even more. In 2018, I was in Los Angeles for a few days and invited Justin to shoot with me in downtown Los Angeles. Justin has a fantastic way of raising the bar each time we get together and it’s so fun to shoot with him.

This conversation takes place in Justin’s backyard in Studio City, California. We talk about his creative approach to “Magic For Humans,” our shared battle against Type 1 Diabetes and the mystique of The Magic Castle plus so much more.

Emilee Petersmark is an incredibly talented singer/songwriter who is best known as the co-lead singer of the very successful four-piece, indie-folk band The Crane Wives.

Emilee and I can’t really pin down how we came to know each other, but we don’t let that slow us down. In this great conversation, Emilee breaks down how to survive in the music business, the grind of touring as a band, the craft of songwriting, as well as discovering her sexual identity in the mid 2000’s.

Stacy Haiduk is an Emmy Nominated American actress based in Los Angeles. Over the past 30 years, she’s worked with the likes of Steven Spielberg, Aaron Spelling and has voiced characters for the recent video game series, “Star Wars: The Old Republic.”

Scanning across Stacy lengthy and impressive IMDb credits, she might be best known for her roles as Patty Williams on “The Young & The Restless,” or Kristen Dimera on “Days Of Our Lives,” Lana Lang on “Superboy,” Jenny on HBO’s “True Blood”, Colleen on “Melrose Place” and Lt. Cmdr. Katherine Hitchcock on “Seaquest 2032”…among dozens of other roles in film and television.

Stacy has also been my very good friend since the 7th grade. We graduated from Northview High School together in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She immediately moved to New York City to pursue her acting, dancing and modeling careers. I’ve always admired her tenacity and relentless drive in a difficult business. Talking to her over the years has inspired me to keep pursuing my own lofty goals…because I saw her doing it.

For someone so accomplished, Stacy’s career has had plenty of ups and downs. She candidly shares with me some of her biggest disappointments as well as the unique way she’s survived financial stresses when she’s not been able to get consistent acting work.

Stacy currently stars in the new feature film “Home Is Where The Killer Is” that was released in October on Netflix. She lives with her husband Bradford and is a dedicated mom to her daughter Sophia who is a rapidly emerging actress and model.
