It's hard to analyse a game where Barca were down to 10 men by the 10th minute against a highly physical and well drilled Monaco.
Ter-Stegen's mistake and Eric Garcia's red card meant that Barca were chasing shadows most of the game. But even with that this wasn't a capitulation. If anything , this was a good wake up call that the team probably needed to get ready for the Champions League.
That said, there were areas where questions remained. Pushed out of their position and made to stretch, Barca looked bereft of ideas at times. The absence of Dani Olmo was felt profusely, and without his cover Pedri looked a bit lost as well.
That said, in this new Champions League model its hard to say how many points would suffice to qualify for R16. The good thing is that there is no dropping down to Europa and even those who don't qualify amongst the first eight, would have a chance in the playoffs.
In short Barca have time and if they can learn from this defeat it will serve them good. Dortmund, Bayern and Atalanta will all be very tough tests and they need to be mentally prepared for it.

The International break is over.
And over the next few weeks, things are going to get busy with Barca playing 7 games on the trot, with 5 away from home and fixtures against Real Madrid and Monaco.
Thankfully the injury count has not gone up. This stretch of seven games and the ones that comes after this will pretty much define how the team goes into the winter break where Flick probably will get a few more reinforcements
But how will the team fare till then?
In this episode we talk about Barca's improving wage bill,, Gavi' return to training and a potential hicccup at Girona.
Tune in and give it a listen on your way to work:)
Right from 2018, there has not been a single season when Dani Olmo has not been connected to returning to Barca.A versatile footballer known for his creativity, technical skill, and vision on the field, Dani has returned to Barca to headline his next act in what would be Barca' s most underwhelming transfer window in years.
Without a doubt one of the most underwhelming transfer windows Barca have had in a long time. The expectations were high, while the finances were low.
Not yet in La Liga's 1:1 rule, Barca had to resort to a mini fire sale to register the one signing they made in Dani Olmo and that too was provisional till December.
Barca still short by about EUR 60M in fair play margins.
But what does it all mean? How bad was the window given the clubs financial situation? Is the squad really terrible or was there some method in the madness?
Dom and I discuss
The summer transfer window is officially shut. Barca for the third year in succession, have not been in the 1:1 rule with their wage bill higher than what was approved by La Liga. This is the third season where Barca have failed to be in the 1:1 rule.
But what got Barca to this place?
We invite Don Hilton from the Barcelona Podcast to discuss the last ten years of Barcelona's transfers.
