みなさんの国には、みんなが知っているお話、というのはありますか？

日本にもそんなお話がいくつかありますが、今日はその中の一つ、「桃太郎（ももたろう）」のお話をします。

誰もが知っているお話です。

「桃」はpeach、「太郎」はその家でいちばん最初に生まれた男の子につける名前です。

桃太郎は、桃から生まれたので、「桃太郎」という名前なんです。

桃から生まれる…ってどういうことでしょうか？

むかしむかし…Once upon a time 

芝刈り（しばかり）…Nowadays, しばかり means to mown lawn, but しばかり in those old tales means to cut fire woods in a mountain forest

どんぶらこ…Onomatopoeia. This is used only for the peach floating sound

おぎゃあ　おぎゃあ…Onomatopoeia.  This is the sound of the baby's cry

さる…monkey

きじ…A kind of bird.  Its size is about a chicken.  Male きじ is colorful.  

鬼（おに）…They are like monsters.  They look like men but their skins are sometimes red, blue, or green.  They have a horn or two on their head.

鬼ヶ島（おにがしま）…The island where おにs live

刀（かたな）…sword

きびだんご…It is made from きび flour.  In the story, きびだんご makes people strong

見張り（みはり）…guard

震え上がる（ふるえあがる）…to be scared a lot

ひっかく… to scratch

つつく…to peck

「降参！（こうさん）」… I'll surrender!

毎年12月になると、ある保険会社（ほけんがいしゃ, insurance company）が、「今年生まれた赤ちゃんの名前ランキング」を発表します。

つまり、2022年に生まれた赤ちゃんにつけられた名前で、どんな名前が人気か、ということがわかります。
