Yes, counters.
I know they are not so popular among Japanese learners, but you cannot avoid them.
It might be easier to grasp which counter is used when you read a text, but it is not the case when you listen.
So you need practice!

"あります (arimasu) there is " in Japanese
“（something）は　どこにありますか (something) wa doko ni arimasu ka” is a useful expression when you would like to find something or ask the direction.
The only thing you need is to listen to the answer carefully!
