  • Episode 9 on Building a Net Zero Future: Startup Innovations, Data and Energy Resilience

For today's show, we sat down with Dr. Stephen Lorimer, who is responsible for Clean Energy Cities at the Centre for Net Zero (Octopus Energy Group). We delved into the challenges and opportunities of transitioning to a #NetZero future. Three key takeaways from our conversation:

\ The power of startups: Startups are driving innovation in the #renewable #energy sector, including technologies that tap into excess solar energy and power electric vehicles. These initiatives are not only promoting clean energy but also revolutionising the way we use and distribute power.

\ Digitalisation is key: To effectively integrate renewable energy into the grid, digitalisation is crucial. From smart meters at the consumer level to back-end systems for the energy grid, leveraging digital solutions helps balance and optimise energy usage. The collection and analysis of #data play a central role in making informed decisions.

\ Building #sustainable cities: Cities have immense potential for clean energy generation and experimentation. By prioritising actions for energy transition and utilising data-driven frameworks, cities can accelerate their journey towards #decarbonisation. From creating local energy systems to collaborative solutions within neighborhoods, cities play a vital role in achieving our net zero goals.

  • Episode 7 on Retrofitting Homes at Scale

This week, we dive into the world of retrofitting homes at scale, featuring today's guest Becky Lane, CEO and co-founder of Furbnow, where she accelerates the adoption of low-carbon technology and helps make homes energy-efficient. 🌱🌍 With domestic heating accounting for a significant portion of carbon emissions, finding solutions in this area is crucial. Becky talked to us about:

\ Why it's not the technology that is lacking in order for us to reach net zero, but the commercial models and propositions to the end consumers
\ That 17% of the entire UK's emissions come from domestic heating
\ How technology plays an important role in making retrofit solutions more accessible to homeowners
\ Why people are wary about makes mistakes when it comes to retrofit measures like choosing the right insulation
\ Her professional testing and learning process to identify the right marketing and growth channels

  • Episode 6 on Voluntary Carbon Markets and the Monetary Value of Carbon Avoidance

Today, we talked to Jane Lucy, CEO of Perse Technology, about energy, fuel poverty and voluntary carbon markets. She explains to us why carbon avoidance has a real monetary value, both to companies and governments. This has created a demand for financial instruments that represent the worth of carbon reduction and  thereby also for voluntary carbon markets. Jane touched on many exciting details in our conversation:

\ how she started her career in TV and quickly realised how technology can drive deep underlying change in an industry
\ the challenge to turn "boring" data into exciting products
\ the fact that fuel poverty has never been as high as it is today, even in developed countries
\ why "green cash" is a great way to incentivise people to optimise their energy usage
\ why it might make more sense to first start to reduce one's household energy usage rather than plant trees that will only have a carbon impact 20 years from now

  • Episode 5 on a Real Estate Asset Manager’s Journey Towards Net Zero

This week, we talked to Alex Edds, Head of Sustainability for LaSalle Europe, on how real estate asset managers can embark on the journey towards a net zero building portfolio. The regulatory landscape in the EU and UK is changing fast, with time ticking for most properties and buildings to become compliant to the new energy standards. The EU Green Deal, the Taxonomy and the UK Government are mandating properties to meet the IPPC recommendations. These are the chances and challenges that Alex deals with as a person responsible for sustainability at one of the largest asset managers. He spoke to us about:

👨‍🎤 how during his career he sometimes felt like being seen as the crazy, green kid in the corner of the corporate world that nobody really wants to talk to
🚀 finding points of acceleration in a rather risk-averse industry
💰 in order to make impact at scale you need to be talking to the source of the money
📖 that well-drafted regulation can really be a catalyst for change
🍀 how the sustainability aspects is today bleeding into all product and company considerations
🏢 that buildings will not meet European 2030 regulatory standards without innovation

  • Episode 4 on The Role of Batteries in the Decarbonisation Journey

This week, we interview Lokeshwar Vohra, Senior Investment Manager at Amber Infrastructure, on the role of batteriesin the decarbonisation journey. In his daily work at a specialist international infrastructure investment manager with approx. £9 billion assets under management, Lokeshwar is, among other things, looking for solutions to fully decarbonise the electrical grid and gives us insights on:

\ how he'd be very proud if the UK would be 100% powered by renewable energies in the coldest day of winter in 2050
\ how electric vehicles and heating add significant demand load to the electrical grid
\ what important role batteries play in all of this, as readily available renewable energy at times needs to be stored for up to six months (interseasonal storage)
\ his dream of how one day consumers will not need to restrict their energy consumption because carbon emissions will be fully decoupled from the usage of energy

  • Episode 3 on Decarbonising the Built World

Today, we talk to Josephine Bromley, co-founder of Mortar IO, to find out about her systematic approach towards breaking down the highest sources of carbon emissions and act on this to decarbonise the built world step by step. In this week's interview we discuss:

\ Why carbon offset needs to be the last resort when it comes to decarbonisation
\ The difference between embodied and operational carbon
\ The upside of cement - even though as a building material it emits more CO2 globally than the entire energy consumption of India as a whole
\ Why heatpumps are a great technology, but are impossible to be installed in every house
\ How green premiums and brown discounts on buildings are becoming more relevant

  • Episode 1 on Flexible Energy feat. Michael Cottrell of Octopus Energy

In our debut episode of the #Futurebuilders podcast by PT1, we take a deep dive into the topic of flexible energy. Michael Cottrell, who is responsible for Strategy and Partnerships at Octopus Energy, is joining us to discuss the one product from Octopus’ many-armed portfolio that interests us the most: zero bills homes – which means optimising the energy generation and consumption of a building in such a way that there is no energy bill for the house’s resident to pay, which becomes possible i.a. through moving energy flexibly around during the day.

Welcome to the brand-new Futurebuilders podcast by PT1 – PropTech1 Ventures where some of the leading voices in real estate innovation share their thoughts. Be sure to subscribe, so you never miss an episode. The real estate industry is facing fundamental transformation, now more than ever, and thousands of startups across Europe are building the future by providing innovative solutions.

Over the next two months, your host Kingma Ma and his colleagues from the PT1 team will drop a new episode every week. PT1 is building the European venture capital platform for transformative real estate technologies and is all about investing and supporting futurebuilders: innovative entrepreneurs from across Europe that tackle the global challenges of our time created by increasing scarcity of natural resources, affordable living space and skilled labour. Every week, we will interview these futurebuilders, whether they come from the startup or corporate side, to talk about their mission of shaping the future of the built world.

For regulatory reasons, it is necessary to point out that this is marketing communication and that investors interested to invest in PT1 should make their investment decision based on the legal documentation.

This first season, we will focus in particular on the role of PropTech in tackling energy issues. The built environment has a significant role to play in the fight against climate change, by decarbonising existing assets as well as building new renewable energy generation assets and more energy-efficient buildings. At the same time, the majority of the carbon footprint for most people comes from heating and powering their homes, which makes the intersection of energy and real estate a particularly relevant topic during a time when energy prices and therefore also inflation and the cost of living have reached new levels. We have thus lined up an experienced list of energy industry expert operators, investors and startup founders to share with you their perspectives and solutions to the topic of creating efficiency and sustainability in the overlap between energy and the built world.
