4 unique characteristics of biotech:
1. Capital Intensive: Drug discovery and development costs a lot of money.
3. Innovation is driven by Business Development (BD): This is part of the “business of biotech” — the acquisition and licensing of assets.
4. Need-based market: Like energy and food, drugs and new medicines are needed to help people live longer.
Other important characteristics:
~Profit incentive: return value to shareholders
~Generic: other companies can manufacture drug after a few years of patent exclusivity
5 transformational areas in biotech in the next 10-15 years:
1. Tech bio: The integration of technology in the biotech industry and drug development.
2. Drugging the undruggable: There are new classes of drugs that are being developed to “drug the undruggable," including molecular glues and PROTACs.
3. Cell and gene therapy: Cell therapy includes biologics (really big molecules) such as CAR T-cell therapies for cancer. Gene therapy includes administering genetic material to elicit a cellular change.
4. Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), data processing and computing: Companies like Ilumina are leading NGS, which allows for DNA-based tests such as cancer screening.
5. Neuropsychiatry: Mental health disorders (anxiety, depression) are on the rise in recent years, and companies are attempting to find novel ways to target these disorders.
