Christians, Together: Strong!!

(Acts 1: 12-14)

Have you watched “Planet of the apes? “

What started out as a science experiment ended up giving the apes an ability to speak, organize and counter attack. A virus that caused Apes to be more human and people to die.

Not just in apes but when we come together, there is might in numbers

Acts 1:12-14 – 12 Then the disciples returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet (Olive Grove), which is near Jerusalem, [only] a Sabbath day’s journey (less than one mile) away. 13 When they had entered the city, they went upstairs to the upper room where they were staying [indefinitely]; that is, Peter, and John and [his brother] James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew (Nathanael) and Matthew, [a]James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas (Thaddaeus) the son of James. 14 All these with one mind and one purpose were continually devoting themselves to prayer, [waiting together] along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

They waited indefinitely – there was no option BAll in one mind and one purpose, devoting themselves to prayers – Waiting togetherWhat if the church could All be in one mind and purpose

Someone may argue, that they were told by Jesus not to leave Jerusalem, however, the decision to stay together was a choice and as we all know it, it was great choice

Luke 24:49 “Listen carefully: I am sending the Promise of My Father [the Holy Spirit] upon you; but you are to remain in the city [of Jerusalem] until you are clothed (fully equipped) with power from on high.”

They were told not to leave Jerusalem but they were not commanded to stay together. In my human thinking, being together was dangerous, they could be sort and killed all together

They knew that there is power in number. When we stay together in unity- (in one mind and purpose) there are great things that happen

Together with God

This whole idea of togetherness is not something that we just feel but its who we are

God created us to have a void in us and that void need to be filled with companionship.

Genesis 3:8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool [afternoon breeze] of the day, so the man and his wife hid and kept themselves hidden from the [d]presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to Adam, and said to him, “Where are you?”

God created us to be in unity with Him – hence He is looking to hang out with Adam and Eve, only to find that the relationship bond is broken

God created a void in us-And that void has to be filled with something more than just the things of this world. If your heart void is not filled with Jesus, unfortunately the devil will take residence. That’s why the bible says:

Matthew 12: 43 “Now when the unclean spirit has gone out of a man, it roams through waterless (dry, arid) places in search of rest, but it does not find it.44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it arrives, it finds the place unoccupied, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and make their home there. And the last condition of that man becomes worse than the first. So will it also be with this wicked generation.”

Giving to the church matters

41 Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury and saw how the people put money into the treasuryThis is at the temple. In the temple there were 13 different giving locations where people could give. There were required temple taxes and money that was to be giving for sin offerings and money that was going to as free will offeringsThe money was used by the temple to pay for the Levites and the upkeep of the templeTithes weren’t an option, they were a requirement- it kept the wheels turningNumbers 18:21 “Behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work which they perform, the work of the tabernacle of meeting.Some would argue that the modern day pastors are not levites and this isn’t a tabernacleBut its curious that the Synagogue isn’t mentioned in the OT, yet Jesus taught there, went there, and ministered there. As did the Apostle PaulTithing was biblical before it was in the Mosaic law- Abraham tithed to Mechilzedek

The biblical idea of established public meeting places has been around for thousands of years and the support of them was through the tithes and offerings of the peopleSee- the people of Israel had a collective idea of being a called out group of people, never as individuals, hence why Jesus said “our father” it wasn’t “my father” we are a collective congregation- and a meeting place was an extension of that- a gathering place to worshipEphesians 2:20-22 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.The church is a holy institution that was established and designed by him and giving money supports it- that’s why this widow was in the temple giving her money and Jesus was watching Because its important.For thousands of years- there have been public meeting places of God’s holy people, supported by the people, with professional clergy who led the people.I’m always curious what Jesus doesn’t say- here’s an opportunity for him to destroy temple worship and tithes and offerings, yet he lets it happen in front of him and teaches from itIts new Testament as well-1 Timothy 5:17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”V 41 and saw how the people put money into the treasury.Why would Jesus be at the treasury watching how people put money into the box if it weren’t important? The money that goes towards God is a big deal- it provides a spiritual connection for the giver and a tangible means by which the church can do her work.

What does it mean to you?Do you take the giving to the church seriously or have you become complacent in it?2 cor 9:6 But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.Its always interesting to me when you must convince Christian people to be generous with their money towards God and the church. The only people uncomfortable in this room is non-giversMatthew 23:23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Define ROI – Return on Investment

A profitability measure that evaluates the performance of an investment and compares is to their other investments

God is in the business of profit. Here is a good one, He created man and woman, and He said,

-Genesis 1:28 – Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply

– How about the parable of the talents- you can argue that by keeping the one talent safe, he was doing good. However, God saw no return on investment and He took it and gave it to the one who did have

– On a side note, God knows our heart, how come the one who got 10, got ten and he produced the most and the one who got 1- hide it. – Your gifts MAY be an indication of where you heart is- May

God knows what He can trust you with.

We all agree that if you are not producing, that will be a huge problem

If you are not producing, you are dying.

Much is given, much is expected

Last time we spoke about what has been given to us, what has been entrusted to us.

That everything we have has been entrusted to us.

Today we are going to dig deeper and find out how we can produce the most of what God has already entrusted us with

Why would a God who created the world seek to have a relationship with us, we continue to sin? Why does God have to prove Himself to us, after all we are bought with a price.

1 Corinthians 19- 20 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within you, whom you have [received as a gift] from God, and that you are not your own [property]? 20 You were bought with a price [you were actually purchased with the precious blood of Jesus and made His own]. So then, honor and glorify God with your body.

You are not your own property- No matter how you view it, you are OWNED!!!

Roman 6:18 And having been set free from sin, you have become the slaves of righteousness [of conformity to God’s will and purpose].

– You were a slave of sin, you are now free- but not to run around doing your own will but do to God’s will and purpose

– Purpose – the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.

Do what you have been created for.

When you become a slave to sin, the devil took you away from your purpose- He kidnapped you and made you a slave – slave to sin and to do his will.

Jesus had to come down to earth and reclaim you but the devil didn’t want to just let you go, so God had to purchase you with the Blood of His Only Son, so that you can now get back to your WORK! – your purpose.

The work you have been created for. You are not doing God a favor – you are returning to your due diligence.

Luke 17:7-10 – 7 “Which of you who has a servant plowing or tending sheep will say to him when he comes in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat?’ 8 Will he not instead say to him, ‘Prepare something for me to eat, and appropriately clothe yourself [for service] and serve me while I eat and drink; then afterward you may eat and drink?’ 9 He does not thank the servant just because he did what he was ordered to do, does he?10 So you too, when you have done everything that was assigned and commanded you, say,

There is a resurrection?

18 Then some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection,

The Sadducees were different than the Pharisees in that they didn’t believe that oral law was as powerful as written law

Pharisees had these huge oral laws that wove these stories of angelic hierarchies and stories such as this about the resurrection. They still didn’t believe in the resurrection tho-

Its disputable if they believed more than the books of Moses, but chances are they did.

Psalm 71:20 You, who have shown me great and severe troubles, Shall revive me again, And bring me up again from the depths of the earth.

Hosea 13:14 “I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death.

Eternal life is REAL

Resurrection is a promise of the OT and the NT- Jesus was very clear that resurrection was and IS a promise of Scripture! Those who are believers and followers of YHWH are promised that we will rise again and live FOREVER.

25 For when they rise from the dead, (Jesus said WHEN- everyone is going to RISE)

Acts 24:15 I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust.

John 5: 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

EVERYONE IS GOING TO BE RESURRECTED.

John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

John 5:24-25 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.

Romans 6:8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,

1 Corinthians 15:49 And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.

So what does it mean to you?

Do you reflect and put hope in the resurrection? Does it motivate you and inspire you to live?

One of the biggest problems of people today is that they forget where they are GOING.

On flight to Hawaii. People are just RUDE. Demanding. Mean. To the staff. I’m like HAWAII

People live so much for Jesus in this life that they forget the FUTURE life in CHRIST

YES- Jesus saves you. The way he fixes your family, finances and health is through ridding the sin from your life! THEN you can experience his best on this side of heaven. But that aint it!

1 Corinthians 15:19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.

Running my route through the neighborhood

You look at another’s spiritual walk and get upset with their success- but are you willing to do what it takes to get where they are?

I would say most people are not willing to do what it takes.

I am not talking about worldly success- I am talking about spiritual success and being able to overcome every trial and temptation- to be an overcomer in every area- to praise Him in the storm

“Our spirit hungers for more and more. We are designed for a great capacity for God; but sin, our own individuality, and wrong thinking keep us from getting to Him. God delivers us from sin- we have to deliver ourselves from individuality.” Oswald Chambers

This spiritual battle that we are in is real. You should take it seriously and you need to take your walk with Jesus serious. Your relationship with Jesus is the most important relationship that you can have, it needs to be treated with the utmost seriousness and earnestness, not in any kind of haphazard or disinterested way.

It takes a measure of self-control and discipline in order to truly be spiritually successful.

You can live your entire Christian walk in the desert, grumbling and complaining, never going into the promised land and getting by with just enough. BUT WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO?

To the Corinthian church, Paul makes a very sobering statement

1 Corinthians 10:23 NKJV

“All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify.”

Paul wrote this letter to address concerns and questions that the Corinthian church was asking, mainly concerning meat offered to idols and idol feasts

He had to correct the Corinthian church on several other grave problems: sexual immorality, divisiveness, secular lawsuits, not separating from the highly pagan society that was surrounding them, humanistic thinking, the Lord’s supper

By “all things”, Paul is referencing “all things which are indifferent in themselves”, that which is of an indifferent nature (like what you are eating and drinking); otherwise everything is not lawful to be done

Let’s get this clear- all food is good and lawful to eat.

The Corinthian church erroneously applied their Christian liberty to that which was inherently sinful

making their liberty a cloak of sinfulness.

Go back to 1 Corinthians 8:8-10

We have no right to even that which is innocent, if it be disadvantageous to the highest interests of ourselves or others.

St. Augustine “He alone does not fall into unlawful things who sometimes abstains by way of caution even from lawful ones”

“all things are not edifying”, expedient. When the doing of them destroys peace, comfort, and edification of others; when it stumbles and grieves weak minds, and causes offense to them

1 Corinthians 6:12

“i will not be brought under the power of any”

On the one hand- offend his brother

On the other- bring himself into bondage to those things he has been set free of

EX: alcohol, these are many of the reasons I do not drink and if you tell another Christian that they might want to think about their drinking and how it might be affecting them or others- they attack you.

Trump is a very divisive leader. People either love or hate. But he’s the leader of the USA and legally, the US Government is entitled to extract taxes from the populace.Some people would refuse to pay based on moral grounds, but you cant- Got to give what he wantsMark 12:13-17 Give Trump What He WantsJesus again is trying to be tangled into a weave of words to hurt himJesus knew what was in their hearts “knowing their hypocrisy” these guys probably weren’t paying taxes or temple taxesJesus uses the denarius to make a point- the inscription on it is caesars, so it belongs to Caesar.So he tells them- give to the governor what belongs to the governor and to God what belongs to god

Here’s few overarching things that should frame our thoughts

Render unto Caesar what is Caesars and render unto God what is God’s is the crux of this verse-

In THIS scripture- Jesus is making the point, that Caesars face is on the coin- so it belongs to him- His IMAGE is on it- so HE owns it.Why is it difficult to give something back to the person who’s image is on it?Ever loaned someone something and then felt uncomfortable asking if you could have it back?Why would we feel that way? Its ours! Bring me back MY tool. MY car. MY whatever. Its MINEIts like when my kids are in school and I have to jump through hoops to get them- THEY ARE MINEWould you agree that if someone owns something, that they have the rights to it? No one would disagree with this!- So, if someone owns it- they have the right to decide where it goes? AGREESo Jesus says “render unto caesar what is caesars” and basically says- It already belongs to him, you’re just giving him what is his. Don’t lose any sleep over it- Give it back to him.BUT IT TAXES- AND TAXES ARE UNJUST…RIGHT?

Taxes were in the OT and instituted by God.

The nation of Israel paid 10% on a temple tax. They were required to give up their first fruits, leave crops on the ground for the poor, Sometimes a whole years crop was given to God. Animals etc.“An excise tax on articles consumed was called “belo” in Hebrew, and a road toll or customs tax was termed “halakh.” In Ezra 4:20, these indirect taxes are termed “tribute” and “duty” respectively in the modern English version. Other words used in various places in the Old Testament were “mas” (forced labor) [I Kings 5:13; v. 27, Hebrew text], “massa” (burden) [II Chronicles 17:11], “mekhes” (measure) [Numbers 31:25-31], and “middah” (tribute) [Ezra 4:20]. These numerous terms were perhaps necessary because the Hebrew language had no general word corresponding to the English word “tax” [Orr, 1956, p. 2918].

Everyone pays taxes.

Jesus paid taxes Matthew 17:24-27 he sent peter to pull a fish with a coin in his mouth

We are supposed to submit to government

Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.1 Peter 2:13-16 Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, 14 or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men— 16 as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God.

Sometimes you go against the Government

Daniel is a great example of a man who lived and worked in a pagan governmentHe did was was required of him. Was a good servant.

Active Resistance

Read Matthew 4:1-11

– Jesus is in the literal wilderness, lead there by the Holy Spirit. (I don’t even like “car camping”!)

– He has fasted for 40 days and nights, and he became “very hungry”. (That’s an understatement!)

– Jesus is tired and hungry, and his flesh is at its weakest. And that’s when satan comes after him.

– The temptations that the devil sets before Jesus are not random. They are a strategic attack on Jesus at his weakest points. They are an attempt to crack the very foundation of his future ministry.

– If the devil can when this battle, he won’t have to fight the war. It would be over before it even starts if he can plant a seed of doubt.

– Example: Hand to hand combat in USMC. “Take away their will to fight”. That’s what satan wants to do to Jesus.

The devil wants Jesus to question his provision.

(Read Matthew 4:3-4 again)

– Satan sows seeds of doubt:

– “If you really were God’s son, you could make food out of rocks. I guess you aren’t then.”

– “Why would the son of God have to starve? How does not eating prove anything?!”

– These are the same tactics since Adam and Eve. Genesis 3:1, “Did God really say…?”

– The devil does this to us still today. Example: The Daniel Fast.

– By Day 2, the devil will be speaking to you: “Why are you doing this? How does starving        yourself prove anything to God? Doesn’t God have work for you to do, so why are you wasting        your time just making yourself miserable?”

AND, The bible says, Even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “Those  unwilling to work will not get to eat.”  If you would start working, God would let you eat!

AND, You failed! Start again Monday. Failed again? It’s fine to quit. Try again next year.

– The devil is questioning Jesus’s identity and actions. The devil is relentless!!  Stay focused!

– Jesus resist the devil with scripture. “People don’t just live on bread. They are sustained      by God’s word.”

– Jesus is saying that spiritual food is even more important than physical food. It satisfies your   soul and makes it strong.

– Just like you on the Daniel fast: Don’t sacrifice the spiritual food God is giving to you           through sacrifice and prayer, just because you are “very hungry”.

The devil wants Jesus to question his protection.

(read Matthew 4:5-7 again)

– The devil is saying, “If you are the son of God, protect yourself from your future hardship. Choose the comfortable route.”

– The devil uses actual scripture to convince Jesus to doubt the plan God has for him. He           uses the Word, but out of context, to try to get Jesus to doubt his Father.

– Jesus resists the devil with scripture, showing that his faith does not require testing God.

– Jesus uses his faith like a shield to defend himself from the attack of the enemy.

– Example: Rogue One, force field that covers the moon w/ one weakness is the gate, they smash the gate and steal the plans that lead to ultimate destruction.

– If you drop your “faith shield” by believing the lie, the devil will fly through the weak spot in       YOU...

One of Jesus’ many teachings to His disciples. HE is teaching about the end of times, how the environment will be and what we can expect and what we are to do.

Three words that carry huge meaning- REMEMBER LOT’S WIFE

The story of Lot’s wife is a tragedy. In the book of Genesis 18 and 19, God is going to destroy Sodom and because He loved Abraham, He told him His plans. Abraham began to intercede for Sodom,

Genesis 18:23-33

God could not find 10 righteous persons, but He sent angels to warn Abraham’s nephew Lot and His family to leave Sodom because it was going to be destroyed. Gen 19:15-26

The sin of Lot’s wife wasn’t that she moved too slow. I have heard people preach it this way- no she didn’t take God’s word through the angels seriously and her heart was still clinging fondly to Sodom.

We must take these three words seriously: REMEMBER LOT’S WIFE

Where did she go wrong?

Genesis 19:1

Although Lot was vexed by the filthy deeds he saw and heard

2 Peter 2:7-8

7 and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked 8 (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)—

he tolerated the wickedness for certain social advantages- “he sat in the gate”

Lot CHOSE to live in Sodom because it was a wealthy and affluent place Gen 13:10-11

He seems, though a good man, to have been too much under the influence of a selfish and covetous spirit

The gate was a place of power and authority. It was said that he who controlled the gate, controlled the city. They were well known and respected men.

Lot was distressed by what he saw, but he never did anything about it, even though he was in a place of authority.

Obviously, Lot exposed his wife to the filthiness of Sodom.

What are you exposing your family to parents?

Men, What are you tolerating and modeling to your children and wives?

Men- you are the head of the woman. She will go where you lead. Where are you leading her? Are you modeling a life that is surrendered to the Lord? Are you modeling a life that cares about the things of God? Are you bringing your family to the house of God and to the throne of Christ?

It is one thing to live in this world and this environment- we have live in society. We cannot run and hide, but it is quite another to sit in the gate and do nothing about it.

You have to teach your children right from wrong, good and evil- TRAIN discipline and discipleship

If you sit back and do nothing, you have a part in your family not coming out of Sodom

Ex: I have a family member who said of his daughter, “she was not taught to live like this”

Yet, when I look at his life, she is living exactly the way he has modeled for her.

Remember Lot’s wife

Her heart was set on the things in Sodom

she placed her affections on earthly things, not heavenly things, so when it came time for her to leave behind those earthly things- she couldn’t. She was too attached.

Matthew 6:25-34

We must bear fruit.Colossians 1:10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

To understand this parable, we must identify the characters:Owner of the vineyard ….. GodThe vineyard ……………. IsraelThe tenant farmers ……… Religious leaders of IsraelServants of the owner …… The prophetsSon/Heir of the owner ….. Jesus ChristThe other vinedressers…..The gentiles

If you are God’s people you must produce fruit

This parable directly and indirectly references Israel and the Jewish leadership and describes what their relationship is, and what it is going to beGod had entrusted them with the advancement and management of the kingdom of IsraelSure, they had made some bad decisions and ignored some of the prophets, (Servants) but they were in charge of the vineyardThey basically had two jobs- produce fruit. Wait for the owner of the vineyardIsaiah 5:1-7 OT prophetic of Israel and and its relationship with GodIsaiah 5:2 He dug it up and cleared out its stones, And planted it with the choicest vine. He built a tower in its midst, And also made a winepress in it; So He expected it to bring forth good grapes, But it brought forth wild grapes.Ezekiel 17:23 On the mountain height of Israel I will plant it; and it will bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a majestic cedar.Ezekiel 36:8 But you, O mountains of Israel, you shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to My people Israel, for they are about to come.Israel was supposed to bear fruit and they weren’t doing it.The Goal of YHWH was for his nation, the nation of Israel to bear fruit to show the world what faithfulness looked like. That other nations would see how Israel lived and they would want to live for YHWHAnd Israel produced some great spiritual fruit for many years, but they lost their way.This is what the parable is describing! A lack of fruitfulness an proper management of what they had been entrusted with

What does it mean to you?God is still in the fruit business! He still wants you to produce some fruit. He wants you to PRODUCEHeres what hard-The theology- which is true- that we are not a works based people regarding our salvation has produced a generation of Christians who never grow, never work, and never produce fruitThey hide behind this “I’m saved by grace” which is TRUE. Eph 2:10 is GREATEph 2:8-10 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.John 15: 1-2“I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.As a Christian you should be in the fruit business.
