First I feel like I need to convince you of the value of church and church buildings. You see the value because you’re here. People will denigrate it while actually sitting in it. These two attacks are common place in today’s America :They come out as “I don’t need to be a Christian to go to church” and “Churches don’t need buildings” I want you to see value in what we do, where we do it. Defend Church and its places. This doesn’t get talked about because its not ‘me centered’ churches afraid to talk about itThe reality is that people of God have met in Buildings since before Christ and The Gathering place of Christians has been, and continues to be the greatest evangelistic tool In America

What are we supposed to be doing as a churchFirst- Worshipping together in the Church Building- repeatedly gathering togetherHebrews 10:25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.  Acts 2:42Psalm 111:1 Praise the Lord! Turf War     Acts 19:21-41

- When we last left Paul, he was in Ephesus, God was doing

unusual miracles through him, like handkerchiefs that could heal and cast out

demons. (Confirming the message about Christ.)

- The 7 sons of Sceva (“high priest”?) travelled around

using incantations to heal and exorcise evil spirits. They attempt to use the

authority of the Jesus name in their “spells” and paid the price.

- The news of this encounter spread through Ephesus, and the

Lord’s name was magnified.

- Acts 19:19-20, Also, many of those who had

practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of

all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand

pieces of silver. So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.  ($364,000)

          - With that

kind of value in books alone, the magic industry must have taken a hit.

          - What is

the impact on those who made money from the sale of these books?

- Paul’s spread of the gospel is negatively affecting day

to day business in “sin city.”

- Example: What if

Christians stopped going to R rated movies? U.S. 50% protestant, that’s 150

million people. 43 R rated movies in theaters 2018, at $42 million avg. take

per film.

- That’s 1.8 billion in

sales, cut in half equals a $900 million dollar hit! (The industry might

take notice of that!)

- Other industries in Ephesus have taken notice of how

Paul’s message is turning people away.

1. How hard are you fighting to hold on to the

idols in your life?

Read Acts 19:21-28

- Paul’s ministry is infringing on Demetrius’s turf.

He saw what happened with the magic books, and his silver shrines are sure to

be next.

- Demetrious listed his top 3 concerns: He makes a lot of money

in this job, he’s worried about the reputation/respect of the business,

and their goddess will be discredited (whom currently “all the world”

worships).

- This is a literal story that actually happened, and

often our actions reveal our heart condition.

- Demetrious is defending his idol making business but

revealing that it is an idol to him unto itself.

- This reminded me of the sermon Pastor Butcher preached at the mini-men’s advance this summer about 4 idols we worship in our lives. It really convicted me!

1. Comfort: This is the hardest

one for me!

- Example: I know God

has placed me in my job, but I struggle with fear of losing it. He has been

growing my faith, season to season, and showing me that He is my hope for the

future.

- Demetrious has a good job

with great pay. This is an idol because it represents his safety and

security, his future. No need to trust God if all your needs are met by your

job.

- The answer: Deny

your flesh, choose faith not fear. Understand, who is your provider?!

- Matthew 6:31-34, “Therefore

do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What

shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the

Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But

seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,

I got saved when I was 15 years old. God told me I was going to be a pastor. This is why I never did drugs, alcohol, partying, or had sex with anyone before marriage. God told me to pioneer a church. “Go Up” 2 Samuel 2:1-11

Recap

David is still in the land of the Philistines, before this

point  he had experienced discouragement

and despair, running away from King Saul, hanging out with the enemy and now

Saul is dead

This is the moment he has been waiting for. Since he was

anointed by Samuel as a little boy – a shepherd, the time he has been waiting

for has finally come and he can be King

Lion King “I just can’t wait to be King”

He does what every good bible loving, Christ serving

Christian would do. He enquires of the Lord

                “Shall

I go to any cities of Judah?” – God answers him and says GO UP!

And like a good Christian (described above) he sets out with

God’s blessing – NO

He asks a for further direction “Where shall I go up to?”

Man, do

we miss the mark on this part – We take over/ argue/ ignore etc.

Story - California Trip – (the moment we have been waiting

for)

Down 101 Eureka CA – 9hrs GPS trying to get me back to I-57 or 8hrs later (we were still 7hrs away from

our destination) – we were 2.5hr away from home

It’s sad that we have Him who knows our destiny/ journey path

– yet we tell God, I got it from here Lord (GPS – keep me on 101)

I believe that half the time intentions are good- but we are not diligent to adhere to the steps that are laid out in the Bible, that guides us in order to end up in the city that God wants us in.

This morning I want to talk to you about Going up.

A time has to come when we have to put effort

to leave where we are and move closer to where God is callings us or called us.

This Christian walk is not an easy one. The

enemy will bring, disappointment, deception, distraction - he will try

and get you off goal. Watch out!

Ephesians 6:12  For

we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities,

against powers, against the rulers of [a]the darkness of this age, against

spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places

John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and

to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may

have it more abundantly.

How can we overcome this – How can we successfully run

our race? How can we go up to where God is sending us?

Get up

For the longest I can remember was not a morning person. I

prided in telling people how productive I was at night. That changed

I realized that in order to accomplish all that I needed to

do in a day I had to “get up” earlier every day.

I acknowledged where I was, and that I

need to do something different

Today God is asking you to acknowledge where you because it’s

time to GET UP

David had spent this period of his life running and watching

his back and now, it was time for him to go and in order to do that he had to get

up!

Today I am asking somebody to GET UP spiritually.

Let us have a spiritual awareness – Ask yourself where are you

and where do you need to go?

what unique words!

No one has ever spoken to you about themselves saying,  “I am the bread of life”

People tend to think of themselves more highly than they ought to. In

fact, every person, even those poor unfortunate souls who’s existence is summed up by guilt and shame, think of themselves as

better than they are in reality.

Some people throughout history have gone so far in their arrogance, as

to declare themselves kings, emperors, and even demi-gods, sent to mankind as some sort of gift from heaven. They claim some sort

of divine liniage. and they lead people astray from the living God. They gather

for themselves great influence and speak of themselves in the grandest

language. Kim Jung Il once boasted of nailing 11

hole-in-ones … in a single round of golf. Kanye West

claimed to be a god. and many sect leaders have claimed to be the Christ and

led their followers to their death.

But even among those delusional crazies out there, which of them has

ever said something like, “I am the bread of life?” which of them has claimed that without them, no one would go on

living, or in fact that no one could ever live without them?

I am the bread of life!

 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he

will live forever. (51)

But what does bread of life mean?

How about bread from heaven? … what does that mean?

and if Jesus is this bread, then what in the world does it mean to eat

this bread?

Jesus said “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall

never thirst.” (35) But many of you have come to Him, and if you haven’t already had dinner, you’re sitting there hungry right now and you’re going to go home tonight and make yourself a snack before bed.  So what's that mean exactly?  whoever comes to me shall not hunger.  what sort of truth is found in

the statement, “I am the bread of life”?

First of all, you should remember the context of these profound

words.

I love my bride with the word of God because I want her to grow spiritually v26 My marriage has always been based on the Bible- and we have grown over the years- But we had to keep the bible in the forefront of our life! Him.”Heaven is the goal! I want to go to

heaven- I want my bride to Go to heaven! Because I love her, I don’t try to

create problems in marriage. I don’t gossip about my wife. I don’t fight with

my wife. I don’t want to be the reason to incite anger in her. My bride and I rarely fight, and if

we do, we make amends QUICKLY-don’t let the sun go down Why would I fight with my bride?

Magnify the LORD!

Acts 19:8-20

What’s happening?

Paul’s ministry in Ephesus was

similar to that in Corinth. Paul entered the synagogue where he was already

known (18:19) and spoke boldly for 3 months about the kingdom of God. But as in

Corinth, so in Ephesus, the Jewish people rejected the good news: some became

obstinate, refusing to believe “the Way”. As a direct result of the stubborn

opposition of the synagogue, Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and

went and had discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. Not much is known

about him, other than he was a gentile, philosopher or lecturer of some kind

and rented out his hall to Paul where he stayed for 2 years.

God did unique miracles

through Paul- not just ordinary, but these were “extraordinary” or “special”.

v.11 “God wrought special miracles”. These were not typical, even

for a miracle. Paul used the handkerchiefs and aprons he used in tentmaking,

these were just rags he used to tie around his head as a sweatband or his waste

as an apron, prayed over them and people were healed and demonic spirits left.

A group of Jewish exorcist,

thought it well to use Jesus’ name to cast out demons, and the result was

disastrous.

Fear fell on all at the power

of the Holy Spirit and deliverance came from the occult practices of that

region.

What does it mean to you?

1. When you magnify the Lord,

there will always be scoffers. v. 9

A scoffer- one who speaks to

someone or about something in a scornfully derisive or mocking way.

2 Peter 3:3-4 New King

3 knowing

this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to

their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since

the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.”

17 But

you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of

our Lord Jesus Christ: 18 how they told you that there would be mockers in the

last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. 19 These

are [a]sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the

Spirit.

Paul had no time for scoffers. He had dealt time and

time again with rebellious and hard-hearted people. He had no time to argue

with people, he had a job to do. “You do not want my message?” I will take it

to those who do. He just moved on.

To us: You cannot change anyone. Stop thinking that

you can save people, you cannot save anyone. ONLY JESUS saves and only HE

delivers. You are not the savior. Stop getting into needless arguments that are

futile.

Sometimes, you just have to

move on. People will reject the message of the cross. They are not rejecting

you, they are rejecting Him. Just move on.

I don’t have time to argue

with you about God’s Word. If you do not believe, I have to move on. I have a

job to do.

A scoffer does not hear rebuke

and does not like to be reproved- move on

A scoffer follows there own

desires and interests- move on

Scoffer is the name of the

arrogant, haughty man who acts with arrogant pride

I Pledge Allegiance

2 Samuel 1

What’s happening- an Amalekite

comes to David and gives him a story about Saul’s death and how he witnessed it

and was actually the one to kill him. David mourns for Saul and his best friend

Jonathan in a lament

We know the true witness of Saul’s death from 1 Sam 31 so we know this guy is lying, for what reason- maybe to gain favor from David, a place in his kingdom as Israel’s next king; nevertheless David is intent on the man’s story, his tone changes in v.13 “who are you?” in more of a judicial line of questioning. The young man continues to tell David that he killed Saul.

So that’s your story?

David has staked his whole

life on “touch not God’s anointed”, and because of his allegiance to the Lord

and His king, David had been through many years of affliction and peril. And

this Amalekite thinks he’s going to win favor with David by killing Saul? The

one whom David protected even to the point of his own detriment?

That would be like trying to

speak bad about my husband to pastor Jay, trying to win his approval. Ain’t

gonna happen.

What kind of delusion is this

guy living under? David swore his allegiance to God and God’s anointed

It begs the question: to whom

are you pledging allegiance?

Allegiance defined as- loyalty

or commitment of a subordinate to a superior or of an individual to a group or

cause

David was loyal to God and to God’s man for the job. A very rare thing these days.

It is important to declare

one’s allegiance-

“I pledge allegiance to the

flag”...the US is not needy in making its citizens say the pledge. We have

nuclear bombs. It reminds us of our loyalty to defend America and her way of

life.

The ancient understanding of

faith includes an issue of a response.

“pistis” the Greek word for

“believe” as in John 3:36, has to do with loyalty or allegiance. To keep faith,

you must be loyal.

36 Whoever

believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall

not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

ESV has a more correct

translation

Our marriage vows are linked

with allegiance- do not flippantly enter into marriage vows, otherwise to get a

divorce you should have to call everyone back that was at your wedding to tell

them that you lied

Christianity in America has

become a flippant declaration at the altar, forgetting that you actually made a

vow to God. You cannot say “I am loyal to America and collude with other

nations”

We have been given such a great gift in the atoning blood of Jesus, He was a better sacrifice and gave us a greater covenant with greater promises.

now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also

Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

A gift given requires a

response. My response demonstrates the magnitude of my allegiance.

Four elements of allegiance:

Salvation1 samuel 31 READ Israel flees from the Phlistines because they are losing. Philistines follow after Saul and his sons, Saul is severely wounded. He asks his armor bearer to kill him to save him from being tortured.  They wouldn’t do it, so Saul falls on his sword to save himself from the torture.  Saul, the armorbearer and his sons all died that day including Jonathan.  Israel leaves the cities, the philistines take over the cities. They come and find Saul, cut off his head, strip him and use him as a trophy to warn people to not mess with them. The men of Israel heard what had happened to Saul, so they go down and retrieve his body and burned them there and then buried their bones under the tamarisk tree and then they fast. This is the end of Sauls life. The culmination of his reign as king of Israel. He started out strong, but ended bad. David is supposed to be King, and he resisted it the whole time. Through this book we see that God demands obedience. Jesus will be a perfect KingIf you are a Christian this morning, you should want to end well. If you’re not, you’re probably sitting here wondering where you’re at with God and if you want to follow him. Here’s the problem with Many Christians- they have a goal identity instead of grow identityWe should want to grow in our relationship with Christ every day all day. You never arriveNFL- Trying for touchdown even when behind- why? You can’t regain momentum. FORWARDWe cannot become complacent in our relationship with God- Relationships fade with no growth 2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.If you’re not transforming into the image of Christ- you’re going backward. You can’t stay same
