In the seventh episode of the podcast Fildiwan, we talk with Marwa Abou Leila, founder and director of Photopia, and organizer of Cairo Photo Week, about her decision to leave a career in banking and credit to establish Photopia from scratch, the motivation behind this step, and how she overcame her initial fear of failure.

We also discuss photography as a profession, why she chose to manage Photopia, her vision of leadership, and how her management style has evolved over the past ten years.

Marwa shares what Photopia offers to the world of photography and to the community of photographers, the importance of this role, and whether the institution leans more toward the educational or commercial side. She also shares her perspective on the relationship between contemporary photography and the history of photography in Egypt whether it can be seen as an extension of it or a departure from it.

We explore Cairo Photo Week, how it was executed, the idea behind choosing historical locations in Downtown Cairo, and how the experiences in Alexandria and El Gouna differed from that of Cairo. We also discuss whether there are plans to expand to other governorates, in addition to touching on the Photobook Egypt project.
