As Melbourne Cup fever starts to take hold around the country, for the next few episodes we are highlighting women in racing who have without doubt taken the reins. First out of the starting gate is one of the world's most respected horse trainers. An icon of the industry, Gai Waterhouse has trained 135 Group 1 winners, and was the first Australian woman - and only the third female - to train a Melbourne Cup winner. An Australian Sports medal recipient and a Racing and Sporting Hall of Fame inductee, there is not much more Gai could possibly achieve in her field. Yet her passion is as strong today as it was when her career began.
