Geoff Cunningham graduated in 1983 from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador with a Bachelor of Commerce. He has been in the oil and gas industry since 1987 where he started in the downstream in his capacity as Industrial Sales Manager (Newfoundland and Labrador) for Petro-Canada through Harvey’s Oil, Petro-Canada’s Newfoundland partner. In this role he was responsible for the marine fuels, lubricants and drilling fluid markets. In 1999 Geoff transferred to the parent company, A.Harvey & Co. Ltd. where he assumed responsibility for offshore operations. In 2017 Geoff assumed his current role as Vice President Operations for A.Harvey where in addition to the companies’ offshore operations he oversees Argentia Freezers and Terminals, Harvey Autocarriers and A.Harvey’s bulk road salt divisions.

Geoff is a champion for the Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industry serving eight years on the Noia Board of Directors where he held the office of Board Chair in 2009.

In this episode we speak with 14 year old Danya Russell. She was recently crowned Miss Teen Grand Turk 2023. We met her by chance after a meeting and she spoke to Gerry saying she liked his Royal Turks and Caicos Golf Shirt. Of course that's all Gerry needed to hear, someone interested in golf, so a conversation began. When we found out how articulate she was and saw a video that she did the voiceover for. We asked her and her mom on the spot if she would join us. Thankfully she did as we can showcase youth leadership in action. WATCH this video you will not be disappointed.

Wayne Power is Manager of Power’s Ambulance Service Limited, a family business which has been providing Emergency Medical Services to the Placentia Region since 1984.

He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Memorial University and has completed numerous leadership and professional development programs through the Regional Cadet Instructor School, Fire and Emergency Services and the College of the North Atlantic. An active practitioner in the field of pre-hospital care he is a trained Emergency Medical Responder.

A volunteer in the community he serves as Chairperson of the Our Lady of Angels Parish Finance Council and the Voices of Placentia Bay Festival Committee and Vice Chairperson of CBDC Avalon West. He is a director with the NL Association of Community Business Development Corporations, the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board, past chair of the Port of Argentia, The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 33 and the Placentia Area Historical Society.  He served as an elected member of the municipal council in Placentia for nine years, including four years as Mayor and is also a past Regional Director with Municipalities NL. He has also previously served as a member of the Board of Directors of MADD Avalon.

He has been involved in the Canadian Cadet Organization for over 24 years and is currently a member of the Canadian Forces – Cadet Organization Administration and Training Service. He holds the rank of Captain and is serving as Commanding Officer of 2558 Placentia Royal Canadian Army Cadets.

He is the recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration. He has also received the 15-year volunteer service award from MADD Canada and the Canada 150 Community Leader Award.

Wayne joined the Placentia Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in 2017 as Vice President. He became President at the Annual General Meeting in the Fall of 2019.

Jonathan studied political science and sociology at MUN.  He started out his career working as a special advisor at the house of commons in Ottawa and then moved into senior roles in the departments of health and justice.  Then he spent 7 years in the policing division of the department of justice. Jonathan was elected as a St. John's city councillor and worked with Nunacor Development Corporation in Labrador and Chief administrative officer for the town of Twillingate.  Jonathan is no stranger to trying things and building relationships. He helps us understand the incredible landscape in the Placentia/Argentia area which is the eastern gateway into Newfoundland and Labrador. Jonathan believes Placentia will be the first community in NL to tap into the hydrogen market.

Episode #177 features Sister Geraldine Mason with the Sisters of Mercy.

​Perchance had the great honour to meet Sisters Geraldine, Ellen Marie, and Ruth, the last of the Mercy Sisters living in the the Immaculate Conception Convent, in Conception Harbour, before they moved into St. John’s. Along with the convent, Perchance acquired a companion property that once housed St Anne’s school. This adjoining lot has become the new home of the theatre, gardens, box office and back stage area which includes a large accessible parking area! The purchase of these properties was vital to the growth and sustainability of Perchance Theatre. Cindy grew up in Fox Harbour Newfoundland and she always knew that her father was a US marine. Not until she was 18 did she decide to search for him. She searched and searched and after 22 years she finally found him. This is the story of that search and the subsequent coming together of father and daughter after 40 years apart. This is heartwarming and she received the best gift ever for her 40th birthday!

Aleksandra is a board member of https://www.perchancetheatre.com/ and director of https://lennika.ca/
She has experience working with municipal, provincial and federal government agencies, and community organizations. She has a BA and MA in Political Science from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and is completing a PhD at Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine. Some of her previous work includes evaluating supported employment programs for individuals with mental health conditions, developing innovative pre-employment programs for internationally trained workers in order to reduce barriers to their successful labour market attachment in Canada, expanding work opportunities for persons with disabilities in post-war Bosnia and Herzegovina, and advising on the impacts of asymmetrical federalism for provinces.
