Jay Gallagher worked in construction in Ireland with his dad at the age of 14. Sadly his dad passed away when he was a teenager but his incredibly strong mom kept the family together and instilled a work ethic that serves him well to this day. During university Jay and his brother, while still teenagers started a second hand import auto parts company in their mother's garage. That company still exists today and employees 30 people in Ireland. Jay always had an interest in Canada and decided to move to PEI in 2012. Starting out in construction in PEI he dreamed about one day starting a business with food. Bill Butler started his career in traditional media advertising with The Telegram in St. John's. While working there he came across an opportunity to pursue self employment with his own company www.oilfiltrationsolutions.com in 2002 by representing an emerging Oil Filtration technology that reduces oil consumption and waste.
Bill has continued to grow his customer base and has expanded distribution throughout Atlantic Canada, and more recently to the Nordic countries of Scandinavia. Bev is an award-winning advocate, a best-selling author, an entrepreneur, a former model and fashion designer, and most importantly, a loving mom and wife. But once upon a time, she was an innocent little girl living a life of abuse and torture in a “perfect” house behind a white picket fence.
For more than a decade she was sexually, physically, and mentally abused by her adopted parents. She became pregnant at 17 and on a cold winter’s night, she jumped from her bedroom window and ran away from home. That’s when her life changed.
Despite the circumstances, she was determined to not only survive, but to thrive. She competed internationally as a model, became a successful entrepreneur, and founded the Miles For Smiles Foundation, an organization dedicated to the support, awareness and prevention of child abuse. Through Miles For Smiles, she has facilitated child abuse awareness and prevention events throughout North America. Bev recently published a book called White Picket Monsters about her personal story of child abuse and how she learned to use her experiences as an impetus to help others. Kelly Sandoval is the Executive Director of Rainbow Riders - Therapeutic Riding Newfoundland and Labrador. Kelly tells us about her journey to her current leadership role and about the wonderful organization she leads.

The Rainbow Riders Mission is to facilitate the development and potential of youth and adults with special physical, cognitive, and emotional needs through therapeutic horseback riding and other forms of equine therapy.

Rainbow Riders has operated its therapeutic riding program for almost 30 years. Relying solely on donations and fundraising, Rainbow Riders operates a facility with 16 horses and has an indoor riding arena to support year-round operation.

June Tavenor, a Registered Nurse from St. John’s, Newfoundland, founded www.catalysthealthsolutions.ca as an innovative way to provide access and innovation in health care.

June graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2005 with a Bachelor or Nursing degree and a passion for emergency nursing. She immediately began working at Level One Trauma Centre in downtown Toronto, moving to several other hospitals through a nursing agency.

Upon moving home to Newfoundland in 2010, June was working in the emergency department, while completing her Masters in Nursing from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and continued to work as an Emergency Nurse and as a Nurse Educator before founding Catalyst Health Solutions.

Catalyst brings together June’s passions for advanced health care, patient education, and helping individuals take ownership of their own health care.

Kevin holds a Bachelor of Arts from the College of the Holy Cross, a Juris Doctorate from the University of Ottawa, and a Masters of Law from the University of Turin. Kevin has been with Plian since 2014 and as Executive Director oversees PLIAN’s activities while ensuring access to justice in and legal education in Newfoundland and Labrador, and more broadly across Canada. He is the President of the Public Legal Education Association of Canada and has served the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada as past President, and current chair of the board in addition to his work with PLIAN. Kevin is an avid traveller and has travelled throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, and more. Kevin is an enthusiastic contributor to PLIAN’s social committee!

A 39-year veteran of uniformed service to Canada, Mark Norman retired from the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) in the rank of Vice-Admiral (VADM) in 2019. VADM Norman rose through the ranks to be the Vice-Chief of Defence: the second-highest appointment in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Currently a Senior Defence Strategist at Samuel Associates, VADM Norman helps clients achieve their full potential in supporting the defence and security of Canadians.

His military career has seen him serve at sea domestically and internationally, command a warship, the Atlantic Fleet and ultimately the Royal Canadian Navy. VADM Norman also has extensive experience in training sailors, supporting operations, strategic planning, managing major procurement projects, institutional leadership, and organizational change.

VADM Norman is motivated by dynamic organizations that see value in people, seek continuous improvement and contribute positively to society. He holds a degree in Economics from Queens University and is also a graduate of several professional education programs, including executive leadership courses with the US Armed Forces. He has been awarded several medals and commendations over his four-decade-long career, including the Order of Military Merit and the US Legion of Merit.

VADM Norman is now applying his energy and passion to new challenges such as contributing to the national defence and security discourse as a Fellow of the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, helping sailors, veterans and their families as the Champion of RCN Benevolent Fund and consulting and mentoring.
