Galway Talks with Sally Ann Barrett 11th March 2022
“I’d like to raise an issue for discussion here on the show and see if you can get some feedback from local politicians. The government has announced cuts of 20 cent and 15 cent on petrol and diesel, that’s great. Yet, at my local station fuel went up by 8 cent from yesterday to today and by over 20 cent in the last week alone and will go up again. Is this really helping the working person at all, or is it just a further example of how far removed they are from the ordinary working person. Another example of being seen to act but not in any meaningful way”. From a listener this morning.
Galway East Deputy Ciaran Cannon joined Sally-Ann Barrett on the show this morning to discuss the issue.
Sally Ann spoke with Minister Hildegarde Naughton on the return of transatlantic flights in Shannon Airport today and the rising fuel costs, Deputy Ciaran Cannon and Sinn Fein MEP Mairead Farrell on the Galway schools that were awarded Deis status and Phil Coulter on his return to Galway for his concert in the Galmont Hotel and much more.
It’s been a long time coming but transatlantic air services at Shannon Airport return today after an absence of almost two years. Today sees the return of the Aer Lingus Shannon to Boston service, followed tomorrow by the recommencement of the Aer Lingus New York service. The 28th March will see the return of the Newark service with United Airlines. Minister of State at the Department of Transport with special responsibility for International and Road Transport and Logistics Hildergarde Naughten joined Sally-Ann in Studio.
Under the umbrella of Irish Rural Link (IRL), the National Meals on Wheels Network was established in 2015. The overall aim to provide a local, community-led professional facility to assist people who require services to maintain independence. In recent weeks a Galway woman has been appointed to head up this vital network and her pathway to this new position is as interesting as the role she is set to play. Tracey Noone joined Sally-Ann Barrett this morning.
The government is due to announce plans to cut excise on fuel from midnight tonight. Ministers will hold an emergency meeting later to sign off on plans that would see a 15 to 20 cent reduction on a litre of petrol and diesel. However, it's feared any reduction could be cancelled out, as oil prices spiral globally due to the war in Ukraine. The price of petrol and diesel reached 2-euro a litre in many forecourts this week. Irish Independent Finance Editor Charlie Weston and Williamstown Independent Councillor Declan Geraghty joined Sally-Ann this morning to discuss the issue.
Sally Ann spoke with Irish Independent Finance Editor Charlie Weston and owner of DG Oil and Roofing Declan Geraghty on the rising fuel costs, Kasia Zaranek on her relief efforts for Ukraine, principal of Galway Educate Together Sarah Molloy regarding an update on the schools temporary site and much more.
