Selling goods online through retail arbitrage versus selling a digital product.
Dropshipping products versus providing services.
Why do you want to sell in the first place? Most people will state "I want to make money." That is not good enough!
Many of you know I used to work at a mental health clinic. So I use that experience in multiple examples here. One job role in case management required me to take a list of qualified clients (provided by the insurance) and contact those clients to enroll them onto my caseload. Did I begin my initial calls with "Hi, I am calling from your insurance, my company needs money and I get paid hourly for every billable service I conduct with clients. Will you please allow me to enroll you so that I can get my hourly wage and my company can in turn be reimbursed by the insurance?" HECK NO! Nobody would pitch a free health support service to a client like that! Instead I said something along the lines of "Hi sir/ma'am, if you have 1 minute I can explain that I am calling from your insurance about a free services. We are enrolling clients who need help with obtaining extra free food, support with scheduling with doctors, free transportation to appointments, or assistance for the homeless to connect to housing." THIS WORKED FANTASTICALLY! At the very least, people would want the free food and free scheduling services.
Clients and customers deserve value. And they can sniff a rat from a mile away. Most of us are so savvy with scams and sales pitches that it usually elicits an emotional response. Think of all the spam calls and junk emails we see daily. We don't even need to read them to know that they are spam. The weird typos, the strange lettering, the misspelled names and general odd appearance to the formatting gives us all the signs necessary to know that we might not need to read it or answer the phone call after all.
Task: What service are you actually providing? Is the product you are selling worth the price? Does it address any pain points? Know your audience and know your customer, and most of all know their specific needs. With the economy as it is, no one is just buying things unless they have an impulsivity issue. Most purchases are well thought out and are based on actual needs. People want to feel more beautiful, get more educated, have more opportunity, make more money and be successful, be healthy and in shape. If you are not providing a good product or a good service, you will not get sales.
