Game Deep

This week we get into the mess that is RE-inventing games! We REcount the history of updating and modernizing older games. Why do we love playing new versions of older games? Why are they even REmade? What happens when they go horribly wrong? Join us as we chart remakes, remasters and ports from the 80s to today, both the hits we love and the misses we love to pick apart.

• 0:00 - Current outlook on "remake culture"
• 14:35 - Ports in the 8-bit & arcade era
• 27:30 - Definining "remaster," PS3/360 era
• 36:00 - Types of "remakes": matching the original vs. reimagining
• 47:50 - Why do companies make these: cash grab or artistic vision? Who's the demographic?
• 58:00 - Unsuccessful examples and what went wrong
• 1:07:35 - Historical context of the original compared to a re-release years later
• 1:23:12 - What problems arise when trying to re-release a game? Expired licenses, business decisions, missing source code
• 1:32:10 - What games do we want to see revisited?
