Games on Film

Harry and Rory are joined once again by their guest (and brother) Hamish Steele to take a look at how the world of Pokémon has been translated into a live-action, big-screen, urban-fantasy neo-noir for kids! With Ryan Reynolds providing the voice of a crime-solving, coffee-drinking talking Pikachu, of course. They discuss fan theories, fan service and how this all slots into the PCU (Pokémon Cinematic Universe). It's very twisty.

This podcast contains SPOILERS for Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019).

Harry and Rory present a special episode of Games on Film, recorded live at EGX Rezzed in London on 4th April 2019, as part of the Fringe Theatre line-up. For this panel, they nominated some video games they would like to see turned into a movie, suggesting how they would adapt it and what problems that might encounter, and putting forward cast and crew they think would be up to the task - as well as inviting suggestions from the audience! There is also some discussion about their highlights from EGX Rezzed 2019.

It's been 40 years since Ridley Scott's landmark sci-fi horror was released, and the impact that Alien and its sequels have had on cinema, as well as video games, continues to be felt four decades on. In this episode, Harry and Rory discuss their first encounters with xenomorphs, from Alien War to comic book spin-offs, before running through the films and picking out notable examples of Alien video games. They then turn their attention on video game sequel to the original movie Alien: Isolation and whether its recent digital series successfully translates the tension and terror of the first person survival horror into a third person viewing experience.

This podcast contains SPOILERS for the Alien series (1979 onwards), and the game Alien: Isolation (2014) and the digital series (2019).

One of the big hitters in the video game movie canon, Street Fighter celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. After finally catching it on the big screen, it's time for Harry and Rory to knuckle down with the much maligned adaptation of the classic Capcom fighting game franchise. Harry dedicated a chapter of his university dissertation to the film, so there's some deep discussion regarding the way it interacts with the media landscape and global conflicts of the time, as well as its source material - but is this podcast really just an excuse to trot out favourite M. Bison quotes? OF COURSE!

This podcast contains SPOILERS for Street Fighter (1994).

Harry and Rory don their thinking caps (or should that be thinking top hats?) as they try to solve the myriad mysteries of the Professor Layton movie. Is the film simply an extended animated cutscene or is there more to it than meets the eye? Featuring a pitch for the Brain Training motion picture, a look at 'British Bistro Bear', and a suggestion that the games would have been more appealing had they been called 'Big Smart Man'. Remember, a true gentleman always listens to the Games on Film podcast.

This podcast contains SPOILERS for Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva (2009).

Harry and Rory mark the release of Far Cry: New Dawn with a look at the Uwe Boll adaptation of the first game in the first-person-shooter franchise. Important topics include whether running a lumber mill is more profitable than creating genetically modified super-soldiers, how anyone could get through life not knowing how hand grenades work, and who would win in a fight between one 10-armed man and 10 one-armed men?

This podcast contains SPOILERS for Far Cry (2008).

Harry and Rory don their 3D specs for a trip into the third dimension for the third instalment in the Spy Kids franchise. After a brief recap of the first two movies in the series from film-maker Robert Rodriguez, there are questions in need of answers, including what's with all the Sylvester Stallones, what is it with Ricardo Montalban in a super-powered mech suit chasing a butterfly across the Moon's surface, and what exactly is a Spy Kid?

This podcast contains SPOILERS for Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003), plus Spy Kids and Spy Kids 2.

To mark the release of the Resident Evil 2 remake, Harry and Rory take a trip to Raccoon City, where the Nemesis lives and the zombies ain't pretty, for the second Resident Evil movie. Alice teams up with characters from the video games Jill and Carlos to take on the Umbrella corporation, but will the extra fan service make for a sequel that surpasses the original?

This podcast contains SPOILERS for Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004).

Harry and Rory kick off the year 2019 with a klassic of the video game movie kanon - Paul (Pre-W. S.) Anderson's Mortal Kombat. They consider the game's origins and the controversy it courted, devise a potential spin-off featuring great artists of history, and debate if Killer Instinct had the better tie-in album. The first big screen outing for the infamously bloody fighting game franchise has long been a favourite, but how well does it hold up almost a quarter of a century later?

This podcast contains SPOILERS for Mortal Kombat (1995).
