Garnet and Old

FSU got a real recruiting win with Za'Kari Johnson reclassifying up, picking the Noles over Miami, Auburn, Texas A&M, and Notre Dame, and giving FSU another in-state playmaker 🌴.

Then 2027 kicker Vance Fones puts in a little 11-for-12 workout, because apparently even special teams recruiting showed up with receipts 🦵.

Then it's on to Tom Herman joining Mike Norvell's staff less than a month before fall camp, which is the kind of late-offseason plot twist that could spark some interest. Drop your take in the comments, subscribe, and come hang out with Garnet & Old.

🍢 On3 just handed Florida State the "toughest schedule in the ACC" crown, and honestly? Bring it on. We break down the brutal slate — Alabama on the road, Florida at home to close it out 🏈 — plus celebrate ace Wes Mendes pulling off the rare GPA/ERA double as ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year 🎓. Oh, and Jared Verse is still talking his trash to the Gators from Cleveland, because some rivalries don't need a jersey to stay alive. 👇

Tonight on Garnet & Old, Vince and Ryan go full C-SPAN After Dark — but with more spear plants and more yelling

We open with the biggest college athletics story of the week: the Protect College Sports Act of 2026 advanced out of the Senate Commerce Committee by a 19–9 vote and now heads to the full Senate. The bill would create national rules for NIL, athlete protections, transfer/eligibility structure, and the future of college sports revenue — including a media-rights angle that matters a lot to schools like Florida State trying to survive the growing SEC/Big Ten money gap. The committee says the bill is backed by a broad group of schools, conferences, leagues, and Olympic-sport advocates, while Chairman Ted Cruz framed it as a “fourth-down” moment for college athletics.

Then we shift to the trail, where FSU recruiting is moving faster than Ryan’s emotional stability after one practice clip. Sam LeJeune committed, Marquis Fennell hit decision day, CJ Ohuabunwa reportedly surged after an “amazing” visit, and Jemari Foreman’s OV had the staff fighting off a late Louisville push. The big question: in the NIL era, is Norvell’s staff changing the calendar by pushing early pledges instead of saving everything for the old-school closing pitch? LeJeune’s commitment gives FSU a blue-chip defensive line win in the 2027 class, with the next challenge being the modern recruiting boss battle: holding on until Signing Day.

Tonight's episode comes to you from two very different locations.

Vince is checking in from Miami on his way to a cruise, living his best life somewhere between a beach chair and a buffet line. Ryan, meanwhile, is holding down the fort in Georgia, desperately searching for enough FSU news to justify an entire podcast.

So naturally, we're doing a show anyway.

As always, thank you for hanging out with us. If Vince suddenly disappears during the show, assume he's either boarding the ship or trapped in a buffet line. If Ryan starts ranting about conference realignment, that's just business as usual.

Let's talk some FSU football.

FSU softball got portal-punched 🥎💥 after losing elite stars Isa Torres and Jaysoni Beachum. That is not a roster tweak — that is the softball version of losing your Wi-Fi, your wallet, and your starting quarterback in the same afternoon. Torres entered the portal after winning ACC Player of the Year and D1Softball National Player of the Year, while Beachum’s exit made it two cornerstone losses in under a week.

Meanwhile, football recruiting is in full boom-or-doom mode 🍢🎢: recent blue-chip momentum, painful decommits, official visit drama, and enough message-board smoke to make Ryan start pacing like it’s 3rd-and-8. Jayden Miles gave the Noles a big recruiting win, but Gregory Batson Jr. and Mekhi Williams backing off their pledges keeps the summer drama spicy.

Then we zoom out to the national chaos: the SEC and Big Ten are flexing, Congress is sniffing around college sports, NIL rules are still held together with duct tape, and the Brendan Sorsby scandal has everyone asking who is actually in charge anymore. Spoiler: probably not the NCAA. 🏈💰⚖️

Welcome to the least-prepared episode in show history.

Usually we'd spend this space telling you exactly what we're covering in the world of FSU football, baseball, softball, recruiting, conference realignment, NIL, and whatever fresh chaos Florida State fans are arguing about online.

Unfortunately, that would require planning.

Tonight's show was assembled with the same level of preparation as a college student starting a semester-long project at 11:47 PM the night before it's due. We had a vague idea, a couple of microphones, access to the internet, and what can only be described as reckless confidence.

As a result, we may discuss:

FSU sports
Non-FSU sports
Sports that may or may not exist
Conference realignment rumors
Recruiting updates
Why a certain fanbase is wrong
The philosophical implications of a 3-hour rain delay
Whatever topic accidentally appears on the screen

At some point we'll probably make a good point. No guarantees.

“Offseason?” ... Nah. We've got some great topics on the ledger for tonight...🍢🔥

This week on Garnet & Old, Vince is taking the wheel as we dive into FSU’s May Madness:

⚾ Regionals — Florida State Baseball is hosting the Tallahassee Regional as the Noles start their postseason push toward Omaha.

👑 Royalty — Isa Torres is officially softball royalty after earning National Player of the Year honors. Somebody get her a Garnet cape to go with her Gold crown.

📺 Reveals — Football kickoff times are dropping, the schedule is getting real, and yes, we are already overanalyzing everything like it’s 4th-and-14 with the season on the line.

Ryan is out this week, which means the chaos meter may drop from “Category 5 Florida Man” to “concerned dad reading the weather radar.”

It’s a loaded week in Florida State sports, and tonight Ryan is flying solo because Vince is MIA. 🎙️

Which means the adult supervision has left the building. 🚨

This week on Garnet & Old, Ryan breaks down a packed FSU slate: baseball entering ACC Tournament chaos, football landing a new quarterback commitment, and softball’s incredible season ending in heartbreak. 🍢

Florida State baseball enters the ACC Championship as the No. 3 seed, opening against No. 14 Pitt in Charlotte. The Noles swept Pitt in the regular season, which means Ryan is legally required to be confident while also spiritually preparing for maximum postseason nonsense. ⚾🔥

FSU football landed its quarterback for the 2027 class, as three-star Port Charlotte QB Logan Flaherty committed to the Noles. Ryan will attempt to discuss this responsibly, but there is a non-zero chance he declares him the future of college football by minute 12. 🏈⭐

FSU softball’s season ended with a tough 4-2 regional final loss to UCF, closing out a phenomenal 52-10 campaign. Brutal ending, elite season, massive respect. 🥎💔

Plus: recruiting vibes, postseason anxiety, chat chaos, Ryan talking himself into and out of confidence, and at least one moment where everyone says, “This is where Vince would usually stop him.” 😅

Florida State is bringing the postseason vibes, rivalry smoke, and conference drama all in one beautiful garnet-and-gold buffet.

This week on Garnet & Old, we’re talking FSU Softball earning the right to host a regional after snatching another conference crown like it was sitting unattended at Doak. The Noles are hot, the bracket is spicy, and postseason softball in Tallahassee is officially must-watch TV.

Then we shift from regional heat to Miami hate, as FSU Baseball closes out the home slate against that school from Coral Gables. It’s the final home series, it’s a hated rival, and yes, we will be emotionally reasonable about it for approximately 12 seconds before the yelling begins.

And because college sports can’t go five minutes without turning into a boardroom episode of Game of Thrones, we’ll break down the latest headlines from the ACC Spring Meetings. Revenue, realignment whispers, football power plays, and the ongoing question: how long can this go on?
