SMARTER Team Training

Garrison Draper: A STT Exclusive

Garrison Draper is a young, up and coming sport scientist with experience throughout Major League Soccer. Before coming to Philadelphia, Garrison spent time with the Chicago Fire, where he built and maintained an athlete monitoring system which followed players through physical testing, GPS and Accelerometry, Heart Rate monitoring during games and training sessions, as well as tracking the club’s non-contact injuries. With this data, Garrison was able to better understand the training process and how individuals and the group respond to the rigors of training and the MLS season. Along with that, Garrison served as an Assistant Fitness coach, aiding in the development and implementation of conditioning, strengthening and reconditioning programs. The season before, Garrison was with the Seattle Sounders, where he aided with the development and implementation of their GPS and Accelerometry system as well as many other systems designed to understand the stressors placed on the athletes during a training session and during a season of training. Garrison has authored multiple papers in scientific journals on topics such as “Small Sided Games” and “Neuromuscular Fatigue in Team Sports”. Garrison completed his Masters Degree in Strength and Conditioning, from Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia and graduated with a B.S. in Exercise Physiology from East Stroudsburg University, while also holding certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and United States Weight Lifting. Garrison oversees the performance aspects of the Philadelphia Union, from the First Team all the way down to the U12s.The SMARTER Team Training Audio Interview Series has been developed to share insights from some of the best in the industry.
