Keith visits the Gateway from the rich and rewarding confines of his own music appreciation podcast, The Volume Knob. The very same show that hosted Howard as a guest earlier this week.

On today's episode Keith describes his adolescent appreciation of the neo-prog band Marillion and their breakthrough album "Misplaced Childhood." Howard and Keith talk about how living on separate ends of the country and with very different cultural backgrounds they both separately developed a deep infatuation with this British Band.

Keith's tale is the age-old story of teenage infatuation. A pop song on the radio lures a smart and sensitive teenager into a world of sounds, feelings and ideas that helps him develop towards adulthood. However, it is also the story of how that very same development necessitates the process of moving on.

Upon returning to Gateway Music, Howard interviews his old friend Mark Saul about Mark's long relationship with Pink Floyd's early career album, Atom Heart Mother. Mark talks about the diverse musical influences that led him to find the beauty in this eccentric album. This leads to an exploration of the strange mixture of classical and psychedelic elements on the album. They also explore how the process of recording put tools into place that Floyd would later use to wonderful effect during their imperial phase as rock gods. As well, Mark goes on to talk about what he appreciates in a guitar solo. Lastly, Mark talks of his most recent musical passion, the button accordion.

This is a big one. in the midst of a global pandemic and from the depths of his basement in NDG, Howard gets into the "way-back" machine to visit 1983 as he talks about the first album that he ever claimed as his own, "Hammer On A Drum" by Vancouver band, The Payolas. He tells the story of yet another 80s-era Canadian band that almost made it big in the U.S and the feels that he experienced as he followed the ups and downs of their career.

On this fourth episode of The Quarantimes Howard finally starts to engage with the loneliness of recording and producing the shows by himself from his basement. At the end Howard announces that he is no longer committing to releasing the podcast weekly but rather as they are completed.

Mack Mackenzie songwriter and frontman of legendary Montreal band, Three O'Clock Train, virtually dropped by the Gateway to talk Rolling Stones. Howard and Mack talk about their mutual love for The Rolling Stones jammiest album, "Black and Blue," a recording that is often misclassified as a lesser work. They also go gaga about Fiona Apple's new album "Fetch The Bolt Cutters."

They then argue about who sang The Faces masterpiece single "Ooh La La" and Howard was right. Suck it, Mack!

Finally Mack explains how he learned about songwriting from the recently deceased legend, John Prine.

For this first interview episode of the Quarantimes, Thomas Barnwell​ virtually visits Howard​'s basement to discuss his first love, The Who. Thomas explains how he first fell under their spell. His adolescent desires were expressed in real time by the visceral power and yearning lyrics of "Bargain" from the album "Who's Next". Howard and Thomas break down the Classic Rock masterpiece track by track and also discuss how it marks a high point in the band's development. Plus they get all psychological on Pete Townsend.

The first of my self-produced Quarantimes episodes is a solo affair. Howard patches together a recording studio in his basement and talks about how he first explored Spotify when he became wary of the innovations to iTunes in the mid 2010s. He then explores the first song that he ever "Liked" on Spotify and the album that it came from, "Coney Island Baby" by Lou Reed.

Sandi Armstrong visits the Gateway to discuss Tom Waits, the album 'Blue Valentine" and the song on the album that she calls her own: "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis". Sandi explains why she loves his music and how she has shared this love with her children. Howard complains about Tom's genius, griping that Tom sounds too much Louis Armstrong and that Tom's world is too mannered and caricatured. Sandi patiently listens and then corrects him. They both agree, however, that Tom Waits is a unique and talented artist: a singer-songwriter who creates small stories about small people and then links them into beautiful album-long operas about outsiders. Along the way they talk about improv, negotiating difficult house party DJ situations, and why Debbie Boone's eternally saccharine "You Light Up My Life" is important to both of them.

In a simpler time, Ayelet Rose Gotleib dropped by the Gateway to discuss her lifelong love and commitment to Improvisational avant grade singing. Trained as a classical flautist in Israel, she fell in love with composition and singing as a teenager and met Arnie Lawrence a well established New York Jazz musician who was living in Jerusalem at the time. His guidance and support helped stimulate a generation of Israeli improvisational jazz players and set Ayelet further on her path. Ayelet and Howard talk about the difference between their respective versions of improvisational singing. They also discuss the singers that most inspired her at the beginning of her artistic development and Howard embarrasses himself by reviewing his limited knowledge of Israeli music.

Lastly Ayelet shares a bit of her process in creating her most recent project "Who Has Seen The Wind?"
