Sam Freeman visits the Gateway to talk about the album "Dookie" by Green Day. Sam explains how, as a preadolescent in Ottawa, Canada, the alienation expressed in the album reflected his burgeoning feelings of being an outsider. And then ironically when he moved to Berlin it was that same music of alienation that helped him make friends, create art, find a girlfriend, and most importantly belong. Along the way he and Howard talk about the other titans of mid-90s California Pop-Punk and then they share songs that make them feel a satisfying feeling of being sadly in love.

John Wilson stops by The Gateway to have a chat with Howard about jamming. Over ten years ago John Wilson moved to Montreal after a long career as a musician and composer and for some reason he decided to start jamming with musical naifs, Howard and friend of the podcast, Jason Friedman (Episode 25). Over the course of 90 minutes they explore the emotional and intellectual power of jamming as a tool for connection, self-discovery, and having a blast and Howard explains how those jams led to the creation of Gateway Music. Jon Bernstein (@jonbern), writer and research editor for Rolling Stone Magazine, drops by the Gateway to talk with Howard about the increasingly popular YouTube format of "music reaction videos" - videos showing the emotional reactions of people as they listen to songs for the first time. This past summer a music reaction video documenting two twin brothers appreciating "In The Air Tonight" by Phil Collins went megaviral. Jon and Howard, both long-term fans of the format, were intrigued. The only difference is that Jon wrote a great article about it.

Sit back and relax as they both share their own Gateway music reaction videos and they discuss what makes the videos so fascinating.

The talented Anjana Srinivasan drops by The Gateway to share her lifetime journey of dedication to the violin. Anjana was born into a family that was strongly involved in the study of South Indian (Carnatic) music. Upon hearing the violin performance of Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, Anjana fell in love with Carnatic violin-playing. Unfortunately there were no Carnatic violin teachers in Montreal so she studied Classical violin for over a decade until she finally got the opportunity to train with teachers in India. Eventually she met Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman and trained with his children. And now when she is not busy raising a family and working as a family physician she is the Carnatic violin teacher in Montreal that she never had. Strap in and join Howard on this tour of Carnatic violin and musical passion.
