Howard and Lianna take a deep dive through the emo and pop-punk world of the '00s and finally land on Lianna's lifelong pop soulmate, Demi Lovato.

Kristen O'Sullivan is the music teacher at host Howard Mitnick's children's high school. On this episode she visits The Gateway to explore "Largo" by Brad Mehldau. Vadim Gran visits The Gateway to discuss his musical upbringing in Moscow. From Russian standards to contraband Beatles tapes and then to The Russian Bards, Vadim developed an appreciation for music that triangulated into a love of Old-Timey Blues music. A love that was first accessed on an illegally dubbed VHS copy of The Blues Brothers. Since arriving in Canada as a teenager, Vadim has pursued a love of Blues music and is an active appreciator of his local Montreal Blues community.

Dale Bernier visits the Gateway to talk about his deep connection with "Train A Comin'", Steve Earle's post-rehab masterpiece. We follow Dale from his childhood in Blind River, Ontario through his life around the world. And we also follow him through his musical development from hair metal to punk and hip hop and then to acoustic guitar music. All along the way he is attracted to story songs about tough guys and rough living. This culminates in Dale's love for Steve Earle which he manifested through learning how to play all of the songs on acoustic guitar.

Tranna is a spiritual, pop-culture-obsessed, fashion-hungry, transgender comedian, singer, producer, writer and podcaster (Chosen Family). The subject was the first album that Tranna ever fell in love with, Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill." Howard and Tranna discuss the album in detail. They explore how and why this album appealed to a young Tranna. They also explore what Alanis later came to mean for an adult Tranna leading to her development of her show "DEAR ALANIS: A So-Called Musical Comedy" (next at the 2020 Toronto Fringe).

The amazing Catherine Rebellati finally agrees to visit The Gateway to celebrate Valentine's Day. She and her husband, host Howard Mitnick, discuss the CD "Catherine and Howie's Wedding Show," a collection of 18 songs that reflects the life they shared leading up to their wedding in May 2000.

While discussing the CD that they gave to all of their wedding guests they also explore the story of how they first met and then how their platonic relationship slowly morphed into love. Finally they remember the experiences of their wedding weekend itself.

Ben Burko drops into the Gateway to share his formative experience listening to Wedding Bands while working as a very successful event videographer in Montreal for close to two decades in the 80s and 90s. He explains how he grew up in a musical household with a father who was a professional musician and bandleader. Perhaps that is why he was so appreciative of the quality wedding bands that he worked with on a regular basis.

Ben describes the structure of those Montreal weddings and some of the more memorable songs that he came to know and appreciate so very well. Inevitably Ben shares his own wedding story and how he eventually created his own band.

Mike Deutsch visits the Gateway to share his Gateway album, "A Hard Day's Night" by The Beatles. Yes, Gateway Music finally gets to dive deep into a Beatles album!!!

Mike explains how he fell in love with the album because of the vocal harmonies, However, he also remembers that part of his infatuation with the harmonies came from repeatedly listening to the album on his Walkman as a way to protect himself from the social pressures of a middle school bus trip. Mike also goes on to explain how his love of the Beatles harmonies inspired him to create and record with a pop a cappella group in college.

Howard and Mike each declare their identification with different members of the Beatles. And they explore the album as well as "Revolver" and "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band".

As well, Mike, a native New Jersey boy (New York adjacent), talks about his love for Billy Joel and how must Montrealer's do not feel the same way.

Poet James Hawes enters the Gateway to share his Gateway album, "Key Lime Pie" by Camper Van Beethoven. First he joins in the great Great Gateway tradition of admitting that his Gateway should probably be the Beatles but...

Then he goes on to explain that as a tween he found himself an identity as a school radio d.j. This exposed him to a regular stream of music. Upon finding "Key Lime Pie" he discovered a darkly humorous text bathed in absurdist lyrics and loaded with literary references which spoke to the nascent writer inside of him.

James and Howard also discuss hip hop legends Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and De La Soul. Finally James shares his appreciation for Miles Davis and the artist's connection to his memory of his father.
