Chris Tyler drops in to the Gateway to discuss the first album that he ever purchased, "Achtung Baby" by U2. Chris describes his childhood growing up listening to his father's "World Music" on Toronto Island and the shift that he experienced when he found his own private music. Howard and Chris talk about the band's creative method and how it is similar to the improv method that they use to create music together in musical improv. They also talk about the power of U2 as a live band.

Ariela Freedman is a Liberal Arts Professor at Concordia University. She is also a published author of two novels "Arabic For Beginners" and "A Joy To Be Hidden". Today she drops by the Gateway to chat with her neighbour, Howard Mitnick about her lifelong love for the music of Leonard Cohen. Howard and Ariela compare their relationships to the Montreal music superstar and go on to share about their common experience of losing a parent as a young adult.

Finally, they dive deeply into Cohen's first Greatest Hits album that covers his first five albums and agree that the songs are amazing.

Lauren DeRoller visits the Gateway to talk about her career as a violinist. The daughter of a small-town violin teacher in Hubbard, Nova Scotia, she started playing the instrument by the time she was four years old. Lauren shares the moment, as a 16 year old, when she decided she wanted to make her career as a violinist. Playing her first orchestra rehearsal with The National Youth Orchestra of Canada she was forever changed by the power of Richard Strauss' Don Juan.

Howard and Lauren review her career as she improved from student to touring musician to graduate student and finally as a regular performer with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. They also review Lauren's most recent musical projects that are much more personally and improvisationally oriented.

And throughout Lauren talks about her current infatuation with personality tests and evaluations that help her understand her interpersonal choices and instincts.

David Moss visits the Gateway and tells of his lifelong infatuation with Bob Dylan and his 70s masterwork "Blood On The Tracks." Introduced to both Dylan and guitar by his father, David has continued to share these passions with his own son.
