Guest Brad Buchanan and host Howard Mitnick first discussed U2 as roommates in the early 1990s but they have not seen each other in 25 years. They met in a creative writing group as undergraduate students at McGill University. Since then Brad has published multiple books of poetry. His most recent "The Scars, Aligned" explores the subject of his experience of living with and surviving cancer. The book is suggested reading by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

On this episode of The Gateway, Brad recounts how as a young teenager in Ottawa he fell in love with U2 while listening to the album "The Unforgettable Fire" on the radio. He discusses how the exotic sounds of the album and his own Irish heritage first interested him in the band. The friends enumerate Bono's strengths and weaknesses as a front man and Brad makes a compelling case for the argument that U2 played an important role in ending The Troubles in Ireland. He also explains how U2 inspired him in his successful battle against two different blood cancers.

Tom Devlin​ drops by the Gateway to talk about Sandanista! by The Clash, the very first album that interested him in both music and the world around him,. He recounts how he discovered and fell in love with the album having no preconceptions about punk music or The Clash. Howard and Tom agree on the unique nature of the album as Tom makes the compelling claim that Sandanista! Is the first world beat album. The album is overstuffed with 36 songs on three albums and it is filled with varied song structures that reflect cultures from around the world. Che Tan (aka The Stormex) visits The Gateway to discuss his experiences and musical exposures associated with the video dance game series, “Just Dance”. Within a year and a half of his first exposure to the game in Grade 7 he found himself on a stage in Paris representing Canada in an international competition. Now he has just completed his CEGEP education and has already represented Canada three times in the Just Dance World Championships. On this episode of Gateway Music, Jeff Gandell brings his guitar in to discuss the impact of an instructional DVD series, “Stefan Grossman’s Instructional DVDs: Country Blues” on his appreciation of guitar playing. Jeff first fell in love with music through INXS’ smash hit album “Kick”. However, it was much later that he fell in love with the acoustic country blues of the 30s-50s. Jeff and Howard explore some examples of the finger-picking styles that Jeff learned to play. They also discuss the enigma of Bob Dylan and Jonathan Richman live performances. At the end of the episode we get to hear Jeff perform one of his originals “There Are Days”.

On today’s episode Jason Friedman finally makes his appearance on The Gateway. One of Howard’s closest friends and his most frequent jam partner, Jason has also been a regular listener of the podcast. For his Gateway album, he chooses The Pixie’s Doolittle which was the soundtrack to the summer when he lost his virginity. Neither Howard nor Jason show the album too much love and they agree that the Pixies show that they saw together in 2004 was the worst live show either of them have ever seen. However, as only close friends can do they talk about a lot of music that they have shared together.
