On today's episode Katie Pagnucco drops by to share Tools's Undertow, the album that led her to a decade of intense identification with heavy metal. She recounts her compelling history as an adolescent heavy metal fan and then as a college radio death metal dj. She reveals how the anger and alienation in the music helped her identify her own difficult emotions and thoughts. She also explains how her experiences in improv helped her move beyond using music as a method of self-identification. Howard mostly just makes fun of the lyrics (which is kind of judgy and uncool of him).

Howard's old friend, Saul Pincus is a writer-director/filmmaker (most recently the multi-award winning feature film Nocturne). Vinny Francois (aka Vinny Breezeblocks) drops in to discuss his love of M.I.A.'s first album, "Arular." He explains how her style of synthesizing art by incorporating sounds from various cultures (her Sri Lankan heritage, the south side of London that she grew up in) and various musical cultures (punk, pop, electroclash, as well as various dance styles from around the world) is so appealing to him. He also tells Howard about how entranced he was by the first time he saw her play live. There he first came to appreciate the interesting tension that has remained an important part of her brand: her concurrent desire to be popular but at the same time reject the mainstream. K-Tel compilations revolutionized the musical industry by allowing access to multiple hits at bargain prices. The compilations covered a wide range of popular styles: Rock, Disco, Country, Funk, Novelty Tunes and a large helping of Canadian acts as well. Michael and Howard explore 8-Track technology and the listening ramifications of how it uniquely carved up albums into four sections. They also explore Michael's infatuation with playing guitar and how that influenced the music he listened too.

On this episode the insightful Valèrie Pronovost joins Howard to discuss Kate Bush's The Dreaming. Valèrie explains how important the album was for her as she struggled to understand herself in her turbulent adolescence. She also demonstrates how Kate Bush’s work often represents “trance logic,” where the album, songs, and sounds transport the listener to multiple places and ideas simultaneously.

Together, these two Kate Bush fans do close readings of the lyrics of many of the songs; however, they also explore how the sounds of the album transmit their power and meaning without even needing to examine or understand the words.

Finally Valerie and Howard agree on Kate Bush’s genius but they disagree on which album is her masterpiece. This one is a classic.
