In this week's episode of the Gatty Lecture Rewind, Michael and Bruno Shirely sit down with Dr. Michael Jerryson to chat about his Gatty Lecture, "What Turns Us Violent: Sacred Emergencies." They discuss Professor Jerryson's career working on Buddhism and violence, and how he came to his current research project. Bruno and Michael also discuss the processes of researching and teaching religion and violence with Michael, and how trauma and memory informs conceptions of religious violence today.

Michael sits down to chat with Apiwat Ratanawaraha about his Gatty Lecture, "From Boston to Bangkok: How American Cold-War Urbanism Shaped Thailand’s Current Urban Plans." Apiwat describes how "Thailand’s current urban plans and planning institutions originated from a technical assistance project funded by the United States Operations Mission in 1957." Michael and Apiwat also discuss (among other things). Apiwat's work on ride-hailing apps in Bangkok, and the issues facing Urban Planning Departments in universities in Thailand.

Michael and Alexandra chat with Cornell alum and current Associate Teaching Professor of Cambodian Language and Culture at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, George Chigas. George discusses his Gatty Lecture, "Western Influence on Cambodian Cultural Production After 1991," his time at Cornell, and the current state of Cambodian literature. 

In this week's Gatty Lecture Rewind, Michael and Emily sit down with Rattanakorn Ratanashevorn to chat about LGBTIQ mental health advocacy, treatment, and professional treatment. Rattanakorn Ratanashevorn shares his experiences in personal and professional advocacy in relation to LGBTIQ mental health, and how Thailand can become a country that lives up to its global image of an LGBTIQ paradise.

In this week's episode, Michael and Sarah Meiners sit down with Ma Vang from the University of California, Merced, to talk about her work into the fugitive history of Hmong refugees in the United States. In her research, Professor Ma Vang analyzes Hmong women’s narratives against U.S. redacted archival records to elicit new conclusions about the history and historiography of Hmong refugees in the US.

In this week's episode of the Gatty Lecture Rewind, Michael sits down to chat with Jonathan Rigg about graduate school, honing in on a dissertation topic, and poverty and prosperity in Southeast Asia.
