  • about Music Sundowner Programme 41 – The Trumpet Sings
The trumpet is often associated with brilliance, ceremony and virtuosity, but it has a much wider expressive voice. In this programme we move away from the concerto to discover the instrument in more intimate and varied settings. Dazzling technical display gives way to lyricism, tenderness, reflection and humour, while different accompaniments reveal changing colours in the trumpet’s sound.

We also meet two close relatives: the mellower cornet and the warm, rounded flugelhorn. From Arban’s spectacular Carnival of Venice to Anderson’s gentle A Trumpeter’s Lullaby and Hovhaness’s contemplative Prayer of Saint Gregory, the trumpet continually changes character. Peaslee’s Nightsongs allows us to hear the contrasting colours of trumpet and flugelhorn, while Chet Baker takes us into the intimate world of jazz and improvisation.
The Trumpet Sings invites us to listen beyond the instrument’s brilliance and discover just how expressive, versatile and personal its voice can be. Wynton Marsalis, Donald Hunsberger & Eastman Wind Ensemble - Variations Sur Le Carnaval de Venise · Omar Tomasoni & Jeroen Bal - Concertpiece No. 1, Op. 11 · Omar Tomasoni, Jeroen Bal & George Enescu – Légende · Ryan Gardner & Charity Wicks - Petite Piece Concertante · Matthias Höfs & Hamburg Philharmonic Soloists - Concert Etude, Op. 49 (Arr. • about Music- Programme 118 The Golden Trumpet
The trumpet has long been associated with ceremony, triumph and brilliance, but behind its dazzling sound lies an instrument capable of remarkable elegance and warmth.

In this programme we follow the trumpet's transformation from the noble natural trumpet of the Baroque to the expressive solo instrument of the Classical era. Four magnificent concertos chart that remarkable journey. George Philip Telemann and Johann Wilhelm Hertel capture the brilliance of eighteenth-century court music; Joseph Haydn revolutionises the instrument in his famous concerto written for the newly invented keyed trumpet; and Johann Nepomuk Hummel crowns the programme with one of the greatest concertos ever written for the instrument.
Together these four works reveal that the trumpet is far more than an instrument of fanfares and celebration. It can sing with lyricism, dance with elegance and astonish with breathtaking virtuosity.
Whether you are discovering these masterpieces for the first time or renewing an old friendship, this programme promises an hour of radiant music from the golden age of the trumpet concerto.
Join Brian for an hour devoted to the trumpet at its most radiant – not merely an instrument that announces, but one that converses, dances, and sings. • about Music programme 37-Brass in Concert The Art of the Brass Ensemble
The Art of the Brass Ensemble

Instead of asking, "How loudly can brass instruments play?", this programme asks a more interesting question: "How beautifully can they sing together?"

From the magnificent ceremonial music of Renaissance Venice to twentieth-century concert works, brass ensembles have developed an extraordinary ability to combine brilliance with warmth. Listen particularly for the way individual instruments disappear into a single, unified sonority.
