The Lord Jesus explained that He does the will of the Father, including judgment. He stated that He cannot do anything to deviate from the Father’s will. Then the Lord would open the discussion of witnesses. What would be the significance of witnesses in relation to what is true? In the Jewish mindset, credible witnesses are necessary to establish a claim. Our Lord will establish that His witnesses were John the Baptist, His works, the Father, and the Scriptures.

One of the reasons why the Jews wanted to kill the Lord was His claim of equality with God. Despite the threat, He continued to speak the truth about His unity with the Father. The Lord Jesus claimed that He does the work of the Father as the Father reveals it to His Son. But He did not limit it to the healing of the sick. Included in the work of Father and Son was giving eternal life and the rendering of judgment. The Father delegated the function so that all would honor the Son. The reality of this will happen on judgment day.

The judgment has already been made to all who will not believe. But those who believe in the Father and if they believe that the Father sent the Son will have eternal life. Therefore, one cannot believe in the Father if they do not believe in the Son. And that is the only way to escape judgment.

The Lord healed a man on the Sabbath, which the Jews found unacceptable. Although the Law of Moses established the Sabbath as a day of rest for the Jewish nation, Jewish writers added a list of forbidden actions. Through time, the extra-biblical list became more important than the concept of resting from work. It became a burden instead of a blessing. The Lord Jesus explained that His Father is continuously working, and He is also working. Although God rested after creation, meaning He rested on the cosmological arena, He continued blessing His people. Moreover, the Lord implied that, like the Father, He is above the Sabbath.

When the Lord went up to Jerusalem, He went to Bethesda where He healed an invalid. He commanded the invalid to take up his bed and walk, which the man did. However, after a while, the Jews reprimanded the man who was healed for carrying objects during the Sabbath. The man narrated his account of his healing to the Jews. But the Jews could not even appreciate the healing. They were more concerned about the Sabbath violation. But their concept of a Sabbath violation remains highly debatable.

The first of His signs was the turning of water into wine. The second was the healing of the royal official’s son. And the third was the healing of the old man at Bethesda. The third sign occurred when the Lord went to a feast of the Jews, which was probably the Pentecost. He went up to Jerusalem for the feast, but He took the time to meet an old man at the Sheep Gate.

The Samaritan woman told the people in the town about her encounter with the Lord Jesus. Her story brought the people to Jesus. Many of the Samaritans believed Him. Then the Lord proceeded to Galilee after two days in Samaria. The writer narrated that the Galileans welcomed Him because of what they witnessed in the Passover feast (John 2:23).

The Lord explained to His disciples that His food is to do the will of the Father, and to complete His mission (John 4:34). The ultimate mission was to suffer, die, and rise again. But within the immediate context, it was to engage the Samaritan woman, and the Samaritans from a nearby town. The people believed the woman, then they confirmed their belief after engaging the Lord. Their conclusion was that He is the Savior of the world.

Did you ever feel like you were starving to death? That is probably an exaggeration for some of us. So let us change it a bit. Have you ever felt hungry to the point where you were mentally and emotionally disturbed? Of course, these questions are rhetorical. But remember that moment when you felt you needed to eat, but there was no food? Now, let us translate that to spiritual food. The writer, John, revealed to us another thing about Christ. His food was to do the will of the Father. So, after we discuss the text, our prayer is that we seek to partake of spiritual food, which is doing God’s will.

It was a meaty discussion, filled with relevant topics, from Jacob’s well, living water, where to worship, the Messiah, and the Samaritan’s private life. There was no interruption until it ended. Or, it ended with the arrival of the disciples, who marveled at the sight. Speaking to a Samaritan would be something the disciples may never do unless they saw the Lord do it.

When the woman of Samaria asked for living water, the Lord instructed her to call her husband. She admitted she didn't have one, and the Lord confirmed that she was telling the truth. During their discussion, the woman brought up a major point regarding the appropriate location of worship, specifically whether it should be in Jerusalem or on that mountain. The Lord's reply highlighted that true worship is centered on worshipping in spirit and truth and transcends geographical locations. The author of the Gospel of John consistently portrays Jesus as the Messiah, highlighting that He is not just another regular man. The way to worship God is another critical issue that John discusses, stressing the right way of doing so in spirit and truth.
