The Bible is very clear about the import of the name of God. We are never, ever to take His name lightly but are to call upon His name in prayer and bear His name in this world, in such a way that others will see in us the true reverence we have for our Lord and yes, for His name. Everything we say and everything we do should give evidence that we believe with all of our heart the words of Paul in Philippians chapter two “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name.” Philippians 2:9. May our lives prove that indeed, the name of Jesus is in fact, the “The Name Above Every Name”, but that it is so in our lives as well.

If you’ve lived long enough you’ll eventually fall in love...and that’s deeper than it first appears. To be sure, we can fall in love with people, but we can also “fall in love” with hobbies, places, careers, possessions...you name it. We can have an absolute deep devotion to and indeed a “trust” in the people and things of this world. But in this message in the “Freed From—Freed For” series, we’re reminded that we are to “fear, love and trust in God...above all things”. Can we love other things? Yes. But we are called to love God above ALL things. In other words, our Lord and Savior, God Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is to be “Our One, True, Love.”

One of the questions that every Christian should ask about their faith is “What do the Ten Commandments have to do with my faith-life today?” The reason you should ask that is that the Lord Jesus Himself said in Matthew five, "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” So what does it mean that He is not “abolishing” but “fulfilling” them? To begin with, He fulfilled them for you! He fulfilled the Law, the whole Law, by living a perfect life and doing so...for you! But that being said, the Law, and specifically the Ten Commandments, remains God’s instructions for how we are to live in our in our daily relationship with Him and our daily relationship with others. Are they fulfilled? Are you freed from fulfilling them for yourself? Yes. But are they abolished? No. In other words, we are called as Christians to live in the tension of being freed from the Law, but freed for the Law all at the same time. Thanks be to God, we have indeed been “Freed From—Freed For”.
