March 29, 2023 Ubisoft Ditching E3 2023
Ubisoft has announced that it will not be participating in this year’s physical E3 event, despite previously committing to attending. The company will instead hold its own Ubisoft Forward Live event on June 12 in Los Angeles. In a statement to VGC, a spokesperson for Ubisoft said that while E3 has fostered unforgettable moments throughout the years, the company has decided to move in a different direction. With three months to go, no major company has been officially announced as attending E3 2023, and both Nintendo and Xbox have already confirmed that they will not be participating. The revamped event is due to take place in June at its traditional venue of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

March 28, 2023 Atari Set to Acquire Night Dive Studio
Atari has announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Night Dive Studios, a video game development and publishing company, for a purchase price consisting of an initial consideration of $10 million, payable in cash and Atari shares. Atari also announced that it plans to issue €30 million ($33.9 million) worth of convertible bonds in order to meet its capital needs for its growth strategy and debt refinancing. Night Dive’s expertise in restoring, optimizing, and publishing classic video games, and its proprietary KEX engine, which makes classic games playable on modern hardware, will help enrich Atari’s library of owned IP, leverage Night Dive’s proprietary technology, and support Atari’s retro-focused growth strategy.

March 27, 2023 Apple Invests BIG in Hollywood
Apple is reportedly planning to spend $1 billion a year to release movies in theaters as part of an effort to increase its profile in Hollywood and bring more subscribers to its streaming service. This would be a substantial increase compared to previous years, as most of their original movies have been exclusive to their streaming service or given limited theatrical releases. The move would give Apple movies more traditional theatrical rollouts in thousands of theaters across the country for at least one month. One of the potential releases is Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, which is expected to be co-distributed by Apple TV+ and Paramount in theaters later this year.

March 26, 2023 TMNT's The Last Ronin Getting a Game Adaptation
Paramount Global, the rights holder for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is developing a new video game adaptation of The Last Ronin graphic novel. The Last Ronin video game will be a third-person action role-playing game, similar to Sony’s God of War titles, and will focus on a single character, the lone surviving turtle Michelangelo seeking justice for his fallen comrades. The game will be developed by an unnamed studio and is expected to target an older audience. While the game is a few years off from release, fans can expect more details on The Last Ronin and other TMNT games in the coming months and years. Additionally, TMNT will soon be featured in a Roblox game and a new animated feature film called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

March 26, 2023 Counter Strike 2 Coming this Summer
Valve has just confirmed the arrival of Counter-Strike 2, and it is set to be released sooner than we anticipated. The exact date is yet to be revealed, but the release window is scheduled for the summer of 2023. The game will run on the Source Engine 2 and will be a free upgrade to CS:GO.Valve has also announced that it will be available for limited testing to some CS:GO players, and more details on how to participate will be revealed shortly. The CS2 website states that this release will be the largest technical leap forward in Counter-Strike’s history, ensuring new features and updates for years to come.Valve has highlighted some of the key improvements players can expect from CS2, such as upgraded and overhauled maps, game-changing smoke grenades, tick-rate-independent gameplay, and redesigned visual effects and audio. All the overhauled maps will be built from scratch using the new Source 2 tools and rendering features. Additionally, the updated grenades will be able to interact with other gameplay events, expand to fill spaces naturally, and react to lightning.One of the most exciting features for players is that all their CS:GO items will carry over to CS2. The Nintendo 3DS and WiiU eShop is closing on March 27, 2023, and many games will no longer be available for legal download. Nintendo’s decision to close eShops has upset fans and lovers of video game history as many games may disappear and never be available again. In response, YouTuber The Completionist spent almost a year buying his way through both libraries, purchasing 866 Wii U games and 1547 3DS titles, totaling 1.2TB of data for the Wii U and 267GB for the 3DS. He spent $22,791 and is donating everything he downloaded to the Video Game History Foundation, though the fate of the digital games, in the long run, is unclear.

March 24, 2023 Marvel President Victoria Alonso Fired Amid Visual Effects Criticisms and Phase 5 Preparations
Victoria Alonso, the longtime Marvel president in charge of physical production, post-production, VFX, and animation, has been fired at the behest of Disney co-chair Alan Bergman, according to a new report by Variety. This news has come as a surprise to many observers, as Alonso had been with Disney since 2006 and was known as one of the company’s most influential producers. Her work dates back to 2008’s Iron Man, where she was a co-producer and visual effects producer.
It is unclear why Alonso was fired, but problems around Marvel’s visual effects have been in the news for some time now. The latest MCU project to garner criticism is Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania. Alonso was reportedly “blindsided” by the decision, and Kevin Feige, who was her direct boss, was apparently not involved in the decision.

March 24, 2023 Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts to pen Netflix’s “Gears of War” adaptation
Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts has joined Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the popular video game “Gears of War,” marking another attempt to bring the franchise to the big screen. Spaihts, who is best known for his work on “Dune” and “Doctor Strange,” will adapt one of gaming’s richest and most acclaimed video game sagas with over 40 million copies sold. The “Gears of War” franchise centers on a society divided and on the brink of collapse, facing total extinction by the monstrous Locust alien race. The ragtag Delta Squad, led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is charged with leading humanity’s last stand.
Netflix’s partnership with The Coalition aims to first adapt the game into a live-action feature film, followed by an adult animated series, with the potential for more stories to follow. Spaihts is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves “Gears of War,” according to The Coalition.
Previous attempts to adapt the game have been unsuccessful. Universal hired F. Scott Frazier to write an adaptation in 2018, but no other moves were made on that project. With Netflix’s hiring of Spaihts, “Gears of War” fans have much to look forward to given the screenwriter’s wealth of experience adapting major genre IP.

March 23, 2023 Marvel Pursues Legal Action Against Reddit Leakers of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ Script
Marvel is pursuing legal action against the individual or group responsible for the Reddit leak of the script of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”. The leak included dialogue and key plot points from the film, and Marvel has submitted a DMCA subpoena application to Reddit and Google to reveal the leakers. The subreddit, r/MarvelStudiosSpoilers, which leaked key plot details for several MCU films before their theatrical release, shut down after the subpoena was issued. Marvel’s strict policy to keep scripts under wraps has been harder to maintain during the pandemic as more people have access to sensitive information from home. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” has made $449.2 million so far at the worldwide box office, but it is on track for the worst gross of the Ant-Man trilogy, and has received mixed reviews from critics and audiences.
