  • Geek Hard: Episode 326 – Transforming Fall TV

    We discuss the latest appearance of Matthew McConaughey(?) how is on to share his unique look on all things nerdy and the universe as usual. We also have the return of the Geek Hard Music Club. We play a track from The PDX Broadsides latest album Something Rotten, Catatonic. The song is about fans meetings their celebrity idols and how that sometimes goes awry.
    We take a look at the upcoming Fall TV lineup. If you’ve listened to Geek Hard over the years, you know that we like to talk about geek and genre television at great length. We especially love to prepare you all for the new t.v. series that come our way. And we’ve reached that time of year again where an abundance of new shows are on the horizon. Join us as we take a look at the upcoming Fall TV season. We be break down the new programs for September thru December for Network, Cable and streaming services. Take a listen and maybe you’ll hear about a new show that’ll pique your interest.
    But that’s not all as we’ll also be taking a trip back to 1986 to talk about one of the biggest animated films (and bigger financial flops) of that decade – Transformers: The Movie. The animated film is celebrating it’s 30th Anniversary this year and will be sporting a new Blu-ray Edition in September. Before that comes to be, Andrew and Mr. Green (and Mr. McConaughey) will be giving their thoughts on the legacy of the film and what it means to Transformers fans.

    We discuss the geek news of the week. Talk about the rumour that Rock & Vin Diesel are actually not really fighting and might be a a publicity stunt for WWE. Marvel comics Ri Ri Williams who takes over the mantle of Iron Man will be called Iron Heart. Victor Miller’s lawsuit to reclaim the copyright of Friday the 13th series.  Bryan Singer’s bold declaration that Legion and other X-universe TV shows & movies will all connect together going forward in the future.
    Our review of Mechanic: Resurrection starring Jason Statham, Jessica Alba and Tommy Lee Jones. Synopsis: Arthur Bishop thought he had put his murderous past behind him when his most formidable foe kidnaps the love of his life. Now he is forced to travel the globe to complete three impossible assassinations, and do what he does best, make them look like accidents.
    We also talk with Tiffany Smith. Tiffany has been all over internet and television spreading the word of geek, most notably as one of the hosts of DC All Access and most recently, as a correspondent on the new AMC show, Geeking Out with Kevin Smith and Greg Grunberg. Tiffany Smith has lived all over the country, from L.A. to San Diego, Hershey to New York. Every move created an exciting opportunity to explore, develop new friendships, and cultivate new interests. Each experience built up her spirit for adventure, a love for travel and the ability to connect with just about anyone. From SoCal surfer to Manhattan fashionista to MIT technology geeks, she is equally at ease. After a successful stint in New York, Tiffany felt like it was time for her next big adventure – moving to Los Angeles! Since living in LA she has been putting, what she likes to call, her glamorously geeky personality to good use. Working for G4, MSN, E! News, Marvel, Oxygen, CW Talks, Fandango, DC All-Access and AMC’s Geeking Out.

  • Geek Hard: Episode 324 – Noisy Nerds and the 2 Strings

    We discuss the geek news of the week. DC/WB announces an animated movie finally going back to the well and using the Batman ’66 cast in November. The remake of Clue coming out from Fox which apparently will be a world wide mystery-action-adventure. CW announces that Rob Thomas (iZombie/Veronica Mars) is producing The Lost Boys for 2017. All with in studio guest Shaun Hatton. You’ll remember him from his days on G4 Canada talking video games and other nerd stuff, but he is also the organizer of Nerd Noise Night at The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern Sept. 3rd @ 9pm get your tickets here.
    Our review of Kubo and the Two Strings starring Charlize Theron, Art Parkinson and Matthew McConaughey. Synopsis: Young Kubo’s (Art Parkinson) peaceful existence comes crashing down when he accidentally summons a vengeful spirit from the past. Now on the run, Kubo joins forces with Monkey (Charlize Theron) and Beetle (Matthew McConaughey) to unlock a secret legacy. Armed with a magical instrument, Kubo must battle the Moon King (Ralph Fiennes) and other gods and monsters to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai warrior the world has ever known.
    We also talk with another long time friend of Geek Hard who’s music has been featured on our program many times: Wordburglar! Burgie joined us via phone to talk about the show as well as an upcoming music video for his song Narc Hi-Score.   • Geek Hard: Episode 323 – Conventions, Spaceships & Dragons, oh my!

    We discuss the geek news of the week, rapid fire style. WB being sued for false advertising in Suicide Squad. The focus of Star Trek: Discovery lead will be a woman who is not a captain. Rogue One trailer 2 released. Luke Cage trailer finally released. Greg Berlanti announces a 2 part musical episode crossover with Flash & Supergirl. Man of Steel sequel still in development. Robbie Reyes Ghostrider getting a new series with Marvel comics. Hulu announces that they are producing a documentary about Batman co-creator the legendary Bill Finger.
    We talk with the voice that fans of Killjoys (on Space and Syfy) have become quite accustomed to: Tamsen McDonough (aka Lucy, the AI spaceship). Tamsen chats with us about her on-camera appearance on last Friday’s episode as well as what’s upcoming for our favourite reclamation agents in the latter half of the season. Actor Tamsen McDonough continues her series regular role in season two of the hit sci-fi adventure series KILLJOYS, currently airing on Space (Canada) and SyFy (United States). Tamsen was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and began her formal acting training at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Her love for acting started at a very early age when she played an orphan in her grade three production of Oliver Twist. From there, her acting bug fed on student films as well as shorts and indie projects.
    Our review of Pete’s Dragon starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford and Oakes Fegley. Synopsis: Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford), a woodcarver, delights local children with stories of a mysterious dragon that lives deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. His daughter Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) believes these are just tall tales, until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley), a 10-year-old orphan who says he lives in the woods with a giant, friendly dragon. With help from a young girl named Natalie (Oona Laurence), Grace sets out to investigate if this fantastic claim can be true.
    We also talk with James Armstrong one of the organizers of Fan Expo Canada, happening September 1st to 4th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. He fills us in on all the great guests and events that will be taking place this upcoming Labour Day weekend.

  • Geek Hard: Episode 322 – Inhuman Squad Goals

    We discuss the geek news of the week with in studio guest Sammy Younan, Girth Radio‘s Program Director and host of My Summer Lair. Pokemon GO! cheaters lose another advantage with Pokevision and other such sites have been shutdown. Writer J. Michael Straczynski announces that he is finished with comics and moving on to work on novels and plays. PSN cancels Powers after 2 series of the show based Brian Michael Bendis comic series. The passing actor David Huddleston famous for his role in The Big Lebowski.
    Our review of Suicide Squad starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Viola Davis. Synopsis: Figuring they’re all expendable, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) decides to assemble a team of dangerous, incarcerated supervillains for a top-secret mission. Now armed with government weapons, Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc and other despicable inmates must learn to work together. Dubbed Task Force X, the criminals unite to battle a mysterious and powerful entity, while the diabolical Joker (Jared Leto) launches an evil agenda of his own.
    We also talk with long time friend of the show and well known sci-fi actor Robin Dunne. Robin is best known for his role as Will Zimmerman in four seasons of the Syfy series Sanctuary opposite Amanda Tapping. Other television credits include leading and guest starring roles in shows such as Defiance for Syfy, CSI Miami for CBS, Code Breakers for ESPN, and Dawson’s Creek for WB. He also stars in the indie feature Torment opposite Katharine Isabelle. Dunne has starting spending more time behind the camera and most recently directed his first feature film, ARCHIE, in which he also stars. Robin made his annual appearance to chat with us about his latest projects, including his role on the web series Inhuman Condition as well as the film he’s currently directing, Welcome to Nowhere. We also talk hospital visits, onset weddings and naked skydiving… yes naked skydiving. When Robin joins us it’s always an adventure.

    We discuss San Diego Comic Con news & announcements. We also highlight our best movie trailer (Justice League, Wonder Woman, Kong: Skull Island, LEGO Batman, etc.), best television show trailer (The Walking Dead, The Flash, Arrow, Legion, Sherlock, Iron Fist, etc.), best announcement, best panel, best overall showing (DC, Marvel, Image, Warner Bros, Disney, etc.) and the property we are most looking forward to. There’s a lot to talk about here.
    Our review of Jason Bourne starring Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones and Alicia Vikander . Synopsis: It’s been 10 years since Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) walked away from the agency that trained him to become a deadly weapon. Hoping to draw him out of the shadows, CIA director Robert Dewey assigns hacker and counterinsurgency expert Heather Lee to find him. Lee suspects that former operative Nicky Parsons is also looking for him. As she begins tracking the duo, Bourne finds himself back in action battling a sinister network that utilizes terror and technology to maintain unchecked power.
    We also talk with cartoonist Faith Erin Hicks. Faith’s most recent graphic novel, The Nameless City, came out earlier this year. Listen as Faith discusses the first chapter in this trilogy of books as well a number of other projects she’s been involved in. She’s a great guest to talk about all the great comics that she is doing including Comics Will Break Your Heart a YA novel that she has written. A novel that touches on love, betrayal and the history of comic creator rights.

    We have an interview with Finn Wolfhard star of the Netflix original show Stranger Things. Finn talks with Andrew about the show and his role on the latest Netflix original project. Here’s a little about the show – A love letter to the ’80s supernatural classics that captivated a generation, Stranger Things is set in 1983 Indiana, where a young boy vanishes into thin air. As friends, family and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl.
    Our review of Star Trek Beyond starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban . Synopsis: A surprise attack in outer space forces the Enterprise to crash-land on a mysterious world. The assault came from Krall (Idris Elba), a lizard-like dictator who derives his energy by sucking the life out of his victims. Krall needs an ancient and valuable artifact that’s aboard the badly damaged starship. Left stranded in a rugged wilderness, Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the crew must now battle a deadly alien race while trying to find a way off their hostile planet.
    We also talk with indie comic creator Scott Sawyer about his Kickstarter project NORTH. A new comic about a team of Canadian superheroes, was funded in 8 days. There’s still many days left in the campaign, so now instead of just 1 issue of the comic being published, the goal is to print 2 issues! Scott tells us more about this new band of heroes and what amazing stories await you if you support the kickstarter.

    We discuss the news of the week with our guest in studio guest author Adrienne Kress. We discuss a little Pokemon GO! craziness sweeping the world. The release of the Nintendo Classic the mini console being released this fall. Marvel is releasing a new Jessica Jones series coming back to comics with the original Alias team back to do it again. We also touch on Netflix new social service Flixtape. A lot of classic nostalgia going on this week in the news.
    Our review of Ghostbusters starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. Synopsis: Paranormal researcher Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) and physicist Erin Gilbert are trying to prove that ghosts exist in modern society. When strange apparitions appear in Manhattan, Gilbert and Yates turn to engineer Jillian Holtzmann for help. Also joining the team is Patty Tolan, a lifelong New Yorker who knows the city inside and out. Armed with proton packs and plenty of attitude, the four women prepare for an epic battle as more than 1,000 mischievous ghouls descend on Times Square.
    We also talk with Cara Gee, one of the stars of Inhuman Condition, a new web series on the KindaTV Youtube channel. A story of a therapist who works with patients with supernatural powers, Cara plays Tamar, a young woman with special abilities who has been kept away from humanity for most of her life and is just now entering public life again. We talk about the series and learn more about her character as well as have a few laughs along the way.

    We discuss the news in our rapid fire news style. Star Trek Beyond to Reveal first openly gay character – Sulu, Cody Rhodes to appear on Arrow this Season, Next Iron Man in comics to be Black Woman post Civil War II – 15 year old Riri Williams, Noel Neill (First On-screen Lois Lane) dies at age 95, Bronze Captain America Statue to debut at Comic Con then make it’s home in Brooklyn Park. There is a lot of show so we got hit the news fast.
    We talk with actor-writer-director-producer Jeremy Redleaf. Jeremy chats with us about 3rd Street Blackout, his latest film which is available On Digital HD and On Demand on July 5th. It’s a comedy that takes place days after Hurricane Sandy when large parts of New York went without power. The advertising for this film says it’s a “dark comedy….literally.”
    Our review of The Secret Life of Pets starring Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart . Synopsis: Max (Louis C.K.) is a spoiled terrier who enjoys a comfortable life in a New York building until his owner adopts Duke, a giant and unruly canine. During their walk outside, they encounter a group of ferocious alley cats and wind up in a truck that’s bound for the pound. Luckily, a rebellious bunny named Snowball swoops in to save the doggy duo from captivity. In exchange, Snowball demands that Max and Duke join his gang of abandoned pets on a mission against the humans who’ve done them wrong.
    We also talk with via phone by one of the cast of Dark Matter, the lovely Melissa O’Neil. Melissa plays Two on the Syfy original series (which airs on Space in Canada, Fridays at 10pm). She tells us more about the new season. Before you catch Episode Two of Season Two of Dark Matter, be sure to listen to our interview with Two.

Wreck-It Ralph 2 confirmed for a 2018, Deadpool does an after-credits scene on the Japanese X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer, Nicolas Winding Refn says he wants to do a Batgirl movie, Preacher renewed for a Season 2 and Justin Trudeau to be featured in/on the cover of Civil War II: Chosing Sides #5. There is a lot of show so we got hit the news fast.
    We talk with Aaron Ashmore and Luke MacFarlane, also known as the Jacobis Brothers of Killjoys. In advance of the premiere episode of season 2, you’ll get to hear Aaron and Luke talk about their characters, the show and Luke always being shirtless and when Aaron will be this season.
    Our review of The BFG starring Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill and Penelope Wilton. Synopsis: Ten-year-old Sophie is in for the adventure of a lifetime when she meets the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance). Naturally scared at first, the young girl soon realizes that the 24-foot behemoth is actually quite gentle and charming. As their friendship grows, Sophie’s presence attracts the unwanted attention of Bloodbottler, Fleshlumpeater and other giants. After traveling to London, Sophie and the BFG must convince Queen Victoria to help them get rid of all the bad giants once and for all.
    We also talk with via phone comic artist Steve Lieber to talk about his current Image Comics series, The Fix. Re-teaming with his Superior Foes of Spider-Man partner in crime, writer Nick Spencer, Steve’s giving us yet another comedic book but this time with crooked cops as the protagonists. Get ready to root for the bad guys as we chat with Steve about this hilarious new series.
