Geek Herring

We're making changes over in Geek Herring land! We're so proud to announce the creation and launch of Geek Herring Productions: our very own community-driven network of awesome shows and events.

Geek Herring Productions is a community-driven Twitch stream and Discord channel with talk shows, podcasts, TTRPGs, education, film nights, book clubs, workshops, games, and more. All from our amazing, inclusive community, for our epic community.

We already have two amazing shows confirmed on Geek Herring Productions.

WHAQ is a live-streamed talk show where hosts, Gemma & Liz, discuss queerness, its beauty and its challenges. WHAQ is all about good, educational discussions with some sass and sarcasm thrown in for good measure. Expect lots of curiosity from Liz (baby gay) and lots of real life experience from Gemma (gayer than they come, and has always known it), with a few segments such as ‘WHAQing Off’ where we chat about what’s grinding our rainbow gears, ‘WHAQ facts’ where we challenge each other to a big gay game of True or False and ‘Back in the Gay’ where we talk about prominent dates in queer history. Follow Gemma and Liz on Twitter and Liz on Twitch.

The Crowded Tavern is an actual play Dungeons and Dragons podcast starting in January, live on Twitch, where Co-Dungeon Masters Martin Hoffmann Larsen and Amanda Sloan (yes, of Geek Herring fame, haha) are set to take you off on a fantastic world of magical and adventure. They're casting NOW for four roles - so keep your eyes peeled. Find out more about The Crowded Tavern on their website and Twitter.

If you're already following Geek Herring on Twitch or are in our Discord, you don't need to do anything different - we've rebranded! But you are more than welcome to show Geek Herring Productions some love on Twitter and the brand-new YouTube channel!

We are actively accepting applications for your own cool show/event/whatever ideas - join us in Discord to find out how to apply!

So excited about this change, thanks for being awesome!

How do you handle your morals regarding the entertainment you consume? This world is a wild place, full of dodgy people doing questionable things. So how do you navigate that?

Some moral decisions are easier to make than others. H*rry P*tter and the TERF Queen? Yeah, walk away. Old Navy and their fatphobia or makeup brands and animal testing - these things maybe don't matter as much to you. Sexual harassment at game studios? Questionable. Fast fashion? Definitely a moral quandary that we can't fit into this episode!

This is a big episode. There's a lot to discuss when it comes to this topic and we've really only scratched the surface. Some of our big points:

• you don't have to do it all
• choose your morals whenever it feels right
• put your money into causes or companies you support/who are doing good instead of corporations doing things against your morals
• there is no such thing as a moral billionaire
• don't let yourself get burnt out! take care of your emotional wellbeing in this wild climate

We watched Enola Holmes 2! And, in a rare surprise, we don't really agree on our opinion of the movie!

Moni's biggest issue (and it's a good one!) is that the film portrays historical events in a not so accurate way. This brings up a discussion on the line between historical accuracy and creative storytelling - how much can you change history to suit a story?

Here's what else we talked about:

• where is the line between historical accuracy and creative fiction
• the true story of the 1888 match girl strike
• humanising Sherlock Holmes
• Being your own person
• the importance of community and not doing it alone
• creating opportunities
• police corruption (#ACAB)
• diversity in role casting
• women preparing to save women
• moariarty reimagined

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law is the most fun we've had watching a Marvel show. Maybe ever.

It uses comedy to talk about a huge variety of topical issues super relevant to our society today. Self-acceptance, toxic masculinity, the patriarchy, women supporting women, women dating, looks and appearances, one-night stands, double standards, being fucking awesome at your job, and so much fucking more.

We think it's important to be critical even of the shows that we love, so we are quite critical about She-Hulk. But that in no way detracts from how much we fucking LOVE this and everything it stands for.

We wanted to spend some time talking about the amazing games we've been playing lately!

Moni has joined a CULT. The Cult of the Lamb, that is! She's been deep diving into this cute, addictive little game that's taken Twitch by storm. Not only is she playing live on Twitch with her community, she has a second save just for her to play offline.

Amanda's just completed Lord Winklebottom Investigates, a cute AF point and click mystery adventure starring a gentlemanly giraffe. This game was developed by Charlotte Sutherland of Cave Monsters and was worth the wait.

Amanda's also been playing Call of the Sea. While she's not quite finished yet, it's an enjoyable first person mystery adventure around an island in the South Pacific. While it initially gave Amanada white colonizer vibes, it quickly became apparent that there was something else going on.

What have you been playing lately? Let us know on social media or join us on Discord!

The Umbrella Academy is back for season 3, and after two seasons that Moni kept falling asleep during, this one held her attention like woah.

Spoiler Warning

This entire episode is spoilers. You've been warned!

We couldn't get enough of it. The character dynamics, the character growth, the sibling love/hate relationshps, and the incredibly positive trans representation!

But seriously, this season showcases Viktor's transition in the literal best way possible. It's a 10/10 from us!

We also talk about our favourite characters, least favourite characters, what we love about all the characters, and why Klaus is the best little shit.

Enjoy! We'd love to hear your thoughts as well, let us know on social media or join our Discord!
