In celebration of their super slick reissue of The Soft Bulletin, Team VMP added limited pressings of a couple of too-oft overlooked classics from The Flaming Lips catalogue in Clouds Taste Metallic, and At War With The Mystics. As Clouds Taste Metallic is the album that introduced me to the The Flaming Lips’ unique brand of psych madness, I went ahead and made myself a Flaming Lips box for October.

So, what’s in the box this month? Would a scorching, first time vinyl pressing of a live set from Miles Davis and John Coltrane’s last tour together be of interest to you? If not, well, you really need to adjust your musical priorities.

You better believe I scooped up a copy of that shiny new reissue of U2’s sci-fi epic Zooropa from the VMP store this month. I know, I know, it’s all to easy to throw shade at Bono & Co. these days (they’ve admittedly become odd little caricatures of themselves in recent years), but it’s important to remember that they were once legit the biggest band in the world. It’s important to remember as well that instead of producing and reproducing recycled imitations of the music that made them famous leading up to that period (see The Joshua Tree), they got seriously weird and experimental for a run of three albums (Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and Pop) that saw the band at the height of their creative abilities and artistic ambition. Zooropa is the middle child of that period, and it’s an absolute masterpiece. Don’t bother trying to argue that point.

In the history of popular music, few sounds have been as uniquely identified to a specific location as reggae. Concurrently, few record labels have helped to shape a musical style as much as Trojan Records. Like most music lovers, I can’t claim to know much about reggae as an art form, or Trojan as a label, or even The Silvertones as a band for that matter, except that they all originated on the island of Jamaica, of course. Don’t worry if you don’t know much either, Team VMP is here to begin our education. Silver Bullets is their text.

Lesson #1 – Concerning Lee “Scratch” Perry

Lee Perry began his life in music by apprenticing at Kingston’s legendary Studio One, splitting his time between menial studio tasks and recording his own songs. In 1968, Perry went on to form his on label (Upsetter Records). In 1973, he built his very own studio (dubbed “The Black Ark”) in his back yard. Backed by his legendary studio band The Upsetters, Perry’s distinctive sound would take the reggae world by storm, with Perry continuing to hone that sound by producing tracks for such acts as Bob Marley & The Wailers,
