THE PULL LIST

Jeremy - Thanks Marvel App for being a royal piece of shit. Now that I can’t load comics, I had to go old school. Why do I keep giving them money? I decided to reread Ultimate X-Men to pass the time. This is an outstanding series that builds on the mythos of X-Men. (One of the writers is Millar, we’ll come back to that name.) It twists the popular stories and makes them accessible to a new audience. The “realistic” view of X-Men won me over. I can’t give it a high enough rank. 5 out of 5 Capes.

 

Trish - Bootleg Springs Series by Lucy Score and Claire Kingsley-An incredibly fun and satisfying contemporary romance series, this was one of the best small town romances I’ve ever read. Each book is essentially a stand alone but there’s also an overarching mystery that is resolved spectacularly at the end of the series. 5 out of 5 capes

Trish - Mitchell’s vs. The Machines-An incredibly fun family movie that explores relationships, technology and that good old fashioned torture: The family road trip. I laughed until my stomach hurt (weaponized, evil Furbies? Yes please!) It’s on Netflix, watch it!

Jeremy - Jupiter’s Legacy by Mark Millar. This Netflix series is an attempt to steal back the superhero audience lost by Marvel removing their Defender titles. Because the heroes are truly super, it is lacking in the special effects budget, but it’s holding its own. The story is nothing new, a super team questioning their mission, but it’s taking a practical approach to the plight of heroes and it will be interesting to see if Netflix picks it up for a second season. It might not be at the top of my watch list, but I’d continue should there be more series. 

Deep Dive -  Invincible

Trish - Thanks to Black Nerd Comedy for the recaps that I needed. This is brutal and incredible story telling that is not for the faint of heart. While it did have grim and gruesome moments, it never had the grim dark feel of the Snyder-verse (thank god)

Jeremy - The Watchmen by Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons One of the most iconic graphic novels ever made, The Watchmen remains undecided on if it is genius or garbage. After having a few years between readings I returned and found myself extremely captivated by its less than idealistic heroes. It demonstrates that even the best meaning people are tempted to darkness and we are ultimately left asking, "In the dawning of the superhero, who watches the Watchmen?" It's a behemoth of a book, but despite the slow pace, I give it a 5 out of 5 Capes. Warning: There is a rape scene that is brutally candid and pulls no punches making it more disturbing than many.

 

Trish - Forever Never by Lucy Score Though not a superhero novel or even  a genre novel, this book is hands down one of the steamiest, most awesome romance novels I’ve ever read. It’s safe to say that Lucy Score is easily one of the best contemporary romance authors out there today. I learned A LOT about writing romance in general just from reading her books. Five out of Five capes.

Trish - To celebrate the premier of season six of DC Legends, I’m rewatching the show starting from the very first episode, or at least I was until my husband suggested we skip to the last episode of season one. It’s been really fun to watch these characters at the beginning of their journey knowing where they will end up. Although I do miss the weird and wonderful craziness of the later seasons.

Jeremy - Shadow in the Cloud starring Chloe Grace Moretz Filmed prior to lockdown, this movie not only embodies the horrors of flying at 20,000 feet, but what can be done with a compelling storyline and a minimalist set. While some of the action (and wow, questionable motivation) is just flat out laughable, Moretz delivers an emotional performance that manages to rely almost entirely on her own abilities. Definitely something to check out if you’re not worried about some questionable moments in your period piece action film.

 

Deep Dive -  Falcon & Winter Soldier

Trish - I thought that overall it was a good show. The chemistry between Bucky and Sam was wonderful and complex. I loved how they showed Bucky’s struggle with rebuilding his life and making amends. And how Sam was trying to wrap his head around what it meant to be Captain America while also trying to catch up to life after coming back from the blip. I didn’t like the treatment of Sharon Carter or US Agent’s character. Carter was flat, one dimensional and dull. I feel that what they did was a betrayal of who the character was in the comics and who she was set up in the films to be. She didn’t even get to tell us her emotions or feelings because everyone else around her did that. US Agent had potential but his character arc was muddled and without clear direction. The character of Isaiah Bradley was a heartbreaking, amazing stand out played to beautiful perfection by Carl Lumbly. He has two of the best, most gut wrenching scenes in the entire show and brings up the ugly things white Americans don’t want to be cognizant of in our own history. It was the best performance of the show.

Jeremy - Is the U.S. Agent single? Cause, I have me a new man crush. Overall I was a huge fan of this because of the underlying social commentary and the logistics approach to what happened after the events of End Game. Jeremy - Age of Night - By Amanda Kahl Thanks to the Marvel App never seeming to work, I’ve decided to get my comic fix from one of my favorite indie creators. This has been an ongoing project since she was a student at Savannah College of Art & Design and I really like it for the fact it breaks out of the superhero genre. This European inspired story follows a ragtag group of travelers including a white mage, brawlers, thiefs, and a cute guy transformed into a cat. The dialogue at the start has a few clunky moments, but it finds its footing quickly. Best of all, if you’re a fan of webcomics, the story is available online for free at ageofnight.com. 4 out of 5 Capes.

 

Trish - The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore- not just about the history of this iconic hero, Jill dives into the significance of her origins and legacy in regard to feminism, and society at large. This book is a true deep dive into this character. 5 out of 5 Capes.

Trish - Valley Girl (2020)-  A spunky and fun remake of the 1983 film, this musical version has it all! Teen angst, a three song mashup at a Jazzercise studio and ALL the 80’s teen romance tropes you ever wanted. It’s fun. It’s light. Watch it and don’t take it too seriously.

Jeremy - Titans Season 2 - The first season follows Raven’s emerging powers as the primary storyline, and ends at a horrible spot for a TV series. Unfortunately the story ends abruptly in season 2, but where the story goes from there is not only compelling, but a good dose of heroes in front and behind the scenes. Hefty amount of angst, but it felt appropriate for their situation. Come for Nightwing, stay for Wonder Girl swearing. I’d recommend and season three is set up to be even better!

Deep Dive -  Super Good, Super Bad, Super Useless

General Pointers discussed in this podcast:

Powers must somehow relate to the character, either by complimenting their personality or being in opposition to it

Limitations are a must, none of this magically become stronger or defying the odds at the last second

Highlight the ramifications of their abilities and what it means for their reality beyond the superhero world

Mundane powers (even the lamest) can be made useful with creative problem solving - don’t rely on easy expectations

Make useless abilities work for you within the context of the story, even the guy with blue skin has a story that enrich your world

Jeremy - Marvel Zombies (Robert Kirkman, Sean Phillips, June Chung) This could very well be the best zombie horror I’ve come across. Unlike typical zombie stories, it focuses on the zombies more than the survivors. It isn’t about man vs. man in an attempt to wait out the hordes. Superheroes have become zombies and after feasting on the flesh of the people they were meant to protect, they become aware of their wrong doings and have to cope….until the hunger returns. This might very well be the most terrifying aspect of the comic. 5 out of 5 Capes.

Trish - An American Covenant by Lucile Scott A somewhat subversive look at the mystical movements that helped shape aspects of our American culture and the women who pioneered them.

Trish - Godzilla vs. Kong (starring Millie Bobbie Brown, Alexander Skarsgard, Rebecca Hall, Julian Dennison)  I wasn’t here for the plot (what plot?!), I was here for the smack down, and boy did this film deliver! This was the neon colored,  Kaiju wrestling match of my inner 80’s child dreams! 

Jeremy - Chaos Walking (Starring Daisy Ridley & Tom Holland) Recently released, this novel adaptation seemed to completely slip through my radar. The premise: on a newly inhabited planet, all mens’ thoughts are audible and visible to those around them. But in a community with no women, the appearance of a female crash survivor sparks a growing list of questions. The plot is somewhat predictable, and I found myself asking questions about motivation, but the concept is nifty. I feel with more time to explore the universe, the aliens, and the history of this town, it’d be more captivating. But with the shortage of new science fiction, this quenched my thirst.

Deep Dive -  The World of Superhero Conventions

As superheroes turned from dirty secrets to mainstream media, one time small conventions have exploded across the country. Trish and Jeremy pick some of their favorite conventions, both in-person and virtual. Plenty of choking up as they explain how these bastions of geekdom provide a sense of community for fans.

Jeremy - The Immortal Hulk 1-5 - Creative team Al Ewing, Joe Bennet, Ruy Jose (Cover by Alex Ross) Pushing itself away from the typical action-adventure storylines in comics, this firmly falls into the horror genre. Bruce Banner got an arrow to the brain, leaving him a typical genius (as opposed to comic genius) and he struggles with the duality of his existence with the Hulk. The first few issues are a quality look into the mind of a vigilante, only dips into horror at a PG level. If you like the concept of the Hulk, then this is a must read as the art is amazing. However, five issues in and I find I’m getting a rehashing of the Hulk’s struggle. Where the 2018 run of Venom reinvented the ethos, this continues the same story line. Quality efforts all around, but because we’re not getting something new, I say 3.5 out of 5 Capes.

 

Trish-A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas- Oddly enough this book falls in line nicely with the aspects of trauma and grief that we’ll be touching on later in the show when we talk about WandaVision. This is the fifth book in the series and centers around Feyre’s sister, Nesta and Rhysands adopted brother, Cassian. The two fell in love in the third book in the series, but due to the trauma of war and loss, Nesta went into a destructive depression. The book is filled with healing and owning the strength that can come from our trauma, while also creating found family that not only understands our pain but can strengthen one another through to healing. And oh yeah: Some of the HOTTEST sex scenes I’ve ever read! 5 out of 5 capes.

Trish-One Night In Miami-Directed by Regina King- Film is adapted from a play by the same name and is almost entirely contained in one location, on the night when Muhammad Ali (still Cassius Clay in this movie) won the Heavy Weight title. The movie focuses on Cassius, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown as they navigate turning points in all of their lives. The movie is directed by the transcendently talented Regina King (yes THAT Regina King) who should’ve gotten a best director nomination.

Jeremy - Snyder Knows How to Script a Pee Break - I’ve mocked it long enough, it’s time to admit. Snyder’s Cut is better than the original. Now let me trash the film’s shoddy story, plot holes, and relish in a director’s masturbatory fantasy that he is the one true God. Where Whedon received a solid F, this struggles to reach a D-. Snyder can’t tell a coherent story in four hours? What does man need to make that happen? Evidence of what would go wrong with a first draft? Millions in reshoots? A studio saying, “Do whatever you want?” This film was never about making a quality film, it was, and will always be about Snyder being able to say, “I made a better shitty film than Joss Whedon.”

Deep Dive -  WandaVision: Grief and Female Power

Like many, we can’t help but gush over this new chapter in Marvel’s ever-expanding universe. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany return as Wanda and Vision in this creative exploration into the world of grief. There is humor, sorrow, but most of all, a storyline that tugs at the heart, and creates a complex plot that empowers Wanda Maximoff, good and bad.

Jeremy - Magik - Limited Series (1983) - Written by Chris Claremont and John Buscema. This is a rough read. The origin story of Ilyana Rasputin and her emerging as a magic wielding mutant doesn’t hold up to modern comics. Claremont’s hokey dialogue and explanation of every action (which is redundant with the artwork) makes it a bit of a slog to read through. Having an innocent girl constantly whining kind of makes it hard to connect to the character that appears in New Mutants. 2 Capes (The concept is better than the execution).

 

Dan- Mockingbird (2016) #1-8, Hawkeye and Mockingbird (2010) #1-6 Mockingbird has undergone non stop abuse by the writers at Marvel and even when she gets her own limited run with Hawkeye, she falls into the shadows compared to her companion. However, this drastically changes in the 2016 edition. While cancelled early, the first five issues culminate in an amazing storyline and prove that even a discarded character can shine with the right writer. 4 out of 5 Capes (2016 Comic)

Dan- Dream show: Agent Woo and Darcy as the Agents of Atlas! - With the end of WandaVision leaving fans dying for more, Dan has the perfection solution. Agent Woo and Darcy formed the perfect mix of confidence and humor and proved that even the b-list can shine. Agent Woo, having been part of Agents of Atlas in the comics opens an opportunity for Disney. Plenty of fans are dying for that X-Files style team-up.

Jeremy - Sysiphus: The Myth - Korean Science Fiction filled with mystery and a bit of science fiction. After four episodes, I no longer care that I’m reading subtitles and I need to know what is going to happen between the genius engineer searching for answers about his brother’s death and an elite warrior from the future trying to protect him from the Control Bureau. A little bit of Korean drama, a sprinkle of science fiction, and a story that has me guessing at what will happen next.

Deep Dive -  A New Genre of Mutants

A group of b-list mutants take center stage as a new team of X-Men. Written by Chris Claremont, this group comes together and proves that heavily flawed characters can make for a great cast. We talk about the art direction, the genre bending story-arcs, and the expansion of the X-Universe and how it translates to on screen. Major spoilers for the New Mutants movie if you haven't seen it.

Jeremy - Marauders: We all know I have a fondness for X-Men, and more specifically Kitty Pryde. However, when she took to the helm of an international vessel traversing the globe to rescue mutants, I had my doubts. The new X comics are a bit scattered and don’t feel cohesive, but this one has characters that cut through the arc. With the most recent issue featuring a vengeful Emma Frost, we have the superhero pairing I’ve been waiting for see Whedon’s run on Astonishing X-Men. A solid four capes.

 

Trish - Geekerella: I’ve read the ebook and audiobook. The ebook is FANTASTIC, the audiobook...So, it’s dual first person narrative, and the audio book has a female and male narrator. The woman was AMAZING, she understood what she was saying, she had emotion. It was wonderful. The guy...not so much. I tolerated him because I loved the story and the female narrator. Besides the fact that he’s supposed to be this huge geek and he mispronounced Dahlek TWICE, whoever produced his part of the narration was sloppy. There were entire sentences repeated in nearly every one of his chapters, sometimes two or more in a chapter! Because of that I give the audiobook three capes, and the ebook four.

Trish - Documentary Now-If Christopher Guest had been given a TV show, it would be this show. Created by Seth Meyers, Fred Armisen, Bill Hader. Batsh*t Valley and The Live Cast Recording of Co-Op: The musical.  Streaming on Netflix

Jeremy - Monster Hunter - I have never played the game, so my expectations walking into this were pretty low. Considering it is a Paul W.S. Anderson, I thought it’d bring the same action as the Resident Evil series. It did, to a degree. The movie plays like a video game, light on the story and heavy on the game play. I didn’t care about the actors and the pacing had some serious issues. Even Jovovich’s badassery seemed lacking compared to her Resident Evil counterpart. It’s a good popcorn movie, but it won’t be blowing minds anytime soon.

Deep Dive -  Superhero Relationships That Should Be Canon!

Trish-

Batman and Wonder Woman- Oh My God! Every single time I see the two of these on screen, whether animated or live action, THE CHEMISTRY! If there’s anyone who could balance Batman’s broody dead parents I have to be alone vibe, it’s the Amazon Princess. These two were the ONLY good part of Justice League. If they had given me a Batman Wonder Woman movie where all they did was flirt and kick ass, I would watch that every freaking week.

The Flash and Killer Frost (The Flash Tv show)- I have never liked Iris, the chemistry is so limp, it’s not even funny. It’s like they mentally friend zoned each other and no one is willing to let them do it. Whereas the chemistry between Barry and Frost is *chef kiss*. 

Rip and Sarah (Legends of Tomorrow)- Although I LOVE  Sarah with Ava, there was some great, simmering chemistry between these two. There were moments when I swore Rip wanted to kiss her and I was HERE for that!  

Natasha Romonoff and Bruce Banner- Who doesn’t love a kick ass woman with the world’s most adorable nerd?

Emma Frost & Jean Grey - You have literal Fire and Ice with this coupling. I think with Jean’s wild mannerisms and Emma’s calculated demeanor, they’d be a delightfully dangerous pair of ladies. Also, let’s be honest, it’d be hot.

Jeremy - Black Widow: Widow’s Sting - Macchio, Duonfantino, Rosenberg- Looking for a Black Widow comic, this is one to miss. The piss poor writing and lazy story telling feels like an elementary school kid writing their first book. 1 Cape.

Black Widow #1 (2020) - Thompson, Casagrande, Bellaire -  This run of Blackwidow however, allows Natasha to lead. The story is fast, witty, and puts the rest of her found family in the wings while she takes center stage. There is a mystery here and I want to know where it goes. 4 Capes.

 

Trish - Warriors, Witches, Women: Mythology's Fiercest Females by Kate Hodges  A book all about the most incredible, mysterious and sometimes problematic women in mythology. This collection spans the globe from Ireland, to Japan, to ancient Sumeria. Perfect if you’re looking for a book of bite sized stories about some pretty amazing women. 5 Capes

Trish - Ugly Betty I’m revisiting this show and finding it to be the perfect funny, sweet comfort food right now. If you like quirky and heart warming, this is the show for you! (TW: Parental rejection of LGBTQ characters and problematic language around Trans character.)

Jeremy - Space Sweepers - This Korean produced sci-fi drama brings an action packed storyline with delightfully cheerful characters. You can’t help but root for these people on their quest to make the world a better place. You ignore the huge plot holes, because who cares? The fast paced story is visually stunning and you wish it was the first of a series!

Deep Dive -  Our Favorite Superhero Couples

Trish’s picks from TV and Movies:

Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoke- Yes, I’m going non comic cannon on this one and saying Oliver and Felicity are THE BEST!

Sara and Ava from Legends of Tomorrow- Don’t judge me! These two gave Oliver and Felicity a run for their money as my all time TV/Movie superhero couple fave. 

Lois Lane and Superman- But not just any iteration, I’m talking Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve

Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne- We’re talking the BEST on screen iteration of this couple and that could only be Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Keaton.

Ray Palmer and Nora from Legends of Tomorrow- Real life husband and wife made sparks fly on the show and any excuse to see Ray be a bumbling, smitten bundle of cute is alright with me.

Honorable mentions:

Stever Trevor and Peggy Carter (Unpopular opinion: if they hadn’t retconned their story and given them an HEA they would have been on the list), and Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.

Jeremy’s picks from TV and Movies:

Kitty Pryde & Piotr Rasputin - If you overlook the age problem early in their relationship, this is a love story that has conquered all. Even as they grew as individuals, they managed to find their way back to one another. This was the wedding I’ve wanted for decades.

Wolverine & Phoenix & Cyclops - Don’t lie, you know they’re in a threesome. This is a throuple that deserves some serious screen time. A few scenes in the bedroom is well earned after all their angst.

Cyclops & Emma Frost - Finally, somebody who made Cyclops interesting. Her unwillingness to let him rest on his boyscout persona, Frost helped create a man out of a boy playing at soldier. 

Peter Parker & Gwen Stacy - This one is filed under tragic love. They were together a short time before she died. Parker’s arc got really interesting when he discovered he was the reason she died. Tragic turned gut wrenching from there on.

Superboy & Ms. Martian (Young Justice) - The animated series really made this couple believable. As they played mother and father to a ragtag group of superheroes, they dealt with some fun situations when one of the couple is a telepath. I have to say it’s one of the most believable

THE PULL LIST

Jeremy - Venom (2018) Writer Donny Cates, Pencils Ryan Stegman, Inker JP Mayer. With this run of Venom coming to a close, there is good reason to see what all the fuss is about. The characterization of the Venom symbiote is done incredibly well and the emotional range on page is outstanding. What makes it even more interesting, in a few short pages it goes from being a side character in Spider-Man to having a mythos deeply rooted in the Marvel Universe. Well worth reading and the artwork puts this up there in the pantheon of comics. 4.5/5 Capes

Trish - Haunted Heroine by Sarah Kuhn. This series is one of my all time favorites. It has kick ass asian american female heroes, steamy romance and a really fun world. This book also has some thrills and chills since it takes place at a seemingly haunted college campus during Halloween. Highly recommend whether or not it’s Halloween, 5/5 Capes

Trish - The History of Swear Words.  Wanna see Nic Cage chew scenery and swear up a blue streak? You could que up any of his movies OR you could have a good laugh and learn something by watching this limited Netflix series. It’s funny, informative, fascinating and so much more!

Jeremy - Teddy Bomb. When the description includes a beer delivery guy, a plot to destroy the word and a teddy bear with laser eyes and chainsaw fur, how can you not watch it? It could either be the worst movie of all time, or comedy genius. This one might require cocktails with friends to work, but in the end, it had enough, “WTF” moments to make it entertaining.

 

Deep Dive -  Impact Crater: How the MCU Changed Fandom  

We are more than a decade into the major cross-over-event created by the MCU. Now with comics in the mainstream, there are a whole new wave of fans coming to comic book properties. With this new surge, there is always the fear of gatekeeping as new fans and old fans clash. However, we’re hopeful that this is going to create a new blend of fans who love these heroes from any era!
