In our first episode discussing gender theory, Met & Til call on our friend Mimi to tackle the question 'is femininity an issue for feminism'. We discuss the idea of gender performativity, and how women alter their physical selves to become closer to the feminine ideal. We also look at how capitalism profits from the gender binary, with the neverending onslaught of products to achieve these standards. We look at how the celebration of hyper-femininity can be harmful to women by catering to male attention & validation (rofl), whilst also not wanting to undermine the agency of women and girls. EEK! It's tough. We look at the debate within feminism between 'natural' and 'difference' feminism and hopefully shed some light on why the movement has become so complex and contradicting. It's an absolutely massive episode and we can't wait to hear your thoughts. Boys, don't be nervous, we think you'll find some really interesting crumbs in here!!!
We give a definition of patriarchy and 'natural and difference' feminism is at 40:30.
