  • CHEM 1314 Exam #2 Part 1
In this segment I did a number of problems from a past Exam #2. I began by doing a problem where the products of several reactions had to be predicted. The second problem the ionic and net ionic equation was written for two of the reactions discussed in the first problem. Next we did one of my favorite problems converting from grams to mol using molar mass and finding the number of molecules or formula units using Avogadro's Number. Then we looked at a challenging combustion analysis problem for determining empirical formulas. An interesting problem that combined stoichiometry and concentration. The last problem was a limiting reagent problem.

In today's class we finished our discussion of oxidation and reduction reactions. We discussed the electrolytic cells and nonspontaneous reactions. We looked at nonspontaneous reactions and what the products of electrolyzing molten liquid salts and electrolyzing aqueous salts. Near the end of class we began a discussion of Chemical Kinetics by looking at a chemical reaction at the particulate level and introducing the idea of a mechanism for a chemical reaction.

In today's class we continued our discussion of Chemical Kinetics. We looked at video to see examples of how concentration, temperature and a catalyst affect the rate of a reaction. We then defined speed of a chemical reaction and looked at a plot of concentration versus time to see how to calculate the initial rate of a reaction. We then determined the order of a reaction and introduced the rate law for a reaction.

In today's class we continued our discussion of Chemical Kinetics. We used the method of initial rates to determine the order of a reaction with respect to the reactants, and to calculate the rate constant for the reaction. We then discussed simple reactions and the integrate rate laws for reactions that follow first order and second order kinetics. We also discussed plotting ln[] versus time and 1/[] versus time to determine the order of the reaction and to calculate the rate constant..

In today's class we talked about enthalpy and looked at the DCI on Enthalpy and the First Law. We reviewed how to calculate the enthalpy change of a chemical reaction and discussed endothermic and exothermic reactions. We defined spontaneity and considered whether enthalpy was sufficient to predict whether a chemical reaction is spontaneous. We found that we needed to also consider entropy, so we introduced entropy and discussed the 2nd and third laws of thermodynamics. We discussed how to calculate the change in entropy for a chemical reaction.
