We celebrate the achievements of Puan Sri Dr Rebecca George, one of the earliest female doctors in Malaysia to qualify as a paediatrician. Dr Rebecca was instrumental in identifying and managing many public health problems that children faced in the 70s and 80s. She was involved in implementing the National Immunisation Programme, child growth monitoring, tackling the dengue epidemic among children, and pushing for more research of childhood diseases. In the lead-up to Malaysia Day, she shares her life's work with us, along with her witty observations of having been a female medical student in India, and a globe-trotting specialist in the later years.
They have a head like a horse, a tail like a monkey, possess the ability to change colour like a chameleon, and to grow weed-like appendages on their body. On top of that, they are socially monogamous, the males are the ones who give birth, and seahorse babies are called "fry"! But across the world, seahorses are in trouble, threatened by habitat loss, and sold in a massive global trade, with tens of millions of them taken from the sea each year. Scientists say this can’t go on, or seahorses will severely decline, but are existing conservation efforts enough to save them? Here in Malaysia, a researcher is looking at how cultural practices can turn the tide in favour of seahorse conservation. Joining us to discuss this are Dr. Adam Lim, the Chairperson of Save our Seahorses Malaysia, and Wong Siew Lyn, who runs environmental journalism portal Macaranga.

On the 7th of September Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Ahmad Marzuk Shaary claimed that the government plans to draft four new syariah laws, including the Control and Restriction on the Propagation of Non-Muslim Religions Bill. This news immediately received backlash from some quarters of the Malaysians, particularly on social media. However, in response to the statement by Ahmad Marzuk Shaary, De facto Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said that none of this has even been brought to the cabinet nor Parliament. Syariah Lawyer, Nizam Bashir joins us to discuss what the Control and Restriction on the Propagation of Non-Muslim Religions Bill is all about and whether it is constitutional.
