St Barnabas Daily Devotions

Genesis 1:1

Listen Later

Before we begin…Today we are beginning a new series of devotions. We will be starting at the very beginning of the Bible, reading though the opening chapters of Genesis. To give our usual devotion writers a break, the church ministry staff will each write a whole week’s devotions. We’re also including a short discussion question after each devotion which you could use to think more about the passage or to discuss with a friend, your family or your children – we will try to make them “child-friendly” questions. If you have children, one way to do these devotions with them each day would be to simply read the passage and talk about the question. If you don’t have an appropriate Bible for younger children, two options that you could look up on the internet are the International Children’s Bible (ICB) or the New International Reader’s Version (NIrV).Passage In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. REFLECTIONSWritten by Gus CameronI wonder what questions you have about the beginning of the world. How did it happen? When did it happen? What answers are you wanting? This very first verse of the Bible takes us back to the beginning and it describes just one detail, the most important detail about the beginning of this world. It doesn’t describe when or how, but rather who. It introduces us to God.Our quest to understand our world and ourselves does not start with us, instead it starts with knowing God. We need to see that God is at the beginning of it, and as the creator of the heavens and the earth, he stands over it, ruling it, holding it all together, loving it.As I read this verse, I’m reminded that I can barely make a cake, let alone create the heavens and the earth. How powerful must God be to do that?!As we spend the next few weeks looking back to the beginning, let’s ask God for the humility to understand things from his perspective and allow him to teach us about himself and how we fit into his world.QUESTIONWhat's the biggest or best thing you've ever made. How does that compare with God creating everything?!ABOUT THE AUTHORGus is an Assistant Minister with our Fairfield congregations.
