Genesis 21:1-7

Listen Later

1 Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. 2 Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him. 3 Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him. 4 When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him. 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.6 Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” 7 And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”REFLECTIONSWritten by Sam DarmoWe don’t know how much time went between God’s promise being made to Abraham in Genesis 15 to the actual begetting of Isaac in this chapter. But we do know that God has kept His promise to Abraham even when it was impossible for his wife to bear children because of her old age (v7). Yet this was not the only source of laughter for Sarah, in Genesis 18 when God promised again that she will bear a son, she laughed at the idea of her bearing a child for her beloved husband because of her advanced years (Gen 18:12), you see, she thought she was worn out, and she was right, because she was worn out. And Abraham also laughed at the promise of God for a child through Sarah his wife in Gen 18:17 because he too thought that Sarah was too old. But God brought laughter to them both when God did the impossible and gave them the child of the promise Isaac, whose name means laughter. Yes, indeed, God can bring to reality all of His promises through Christ Jesus especially when we feel that the situation is desperate and unimaginably impossible to change. As 2 Cor 1:20 reminds us “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.”God brought laughter into our lives after saving us from the desperate situations we were in because of our sinfulness. God brought laughter and tears to us when He saved us and we continue to marvel at His amazing works for us through His Son Jesus, our Lord and God. Pray with me that we would be people of God who would say Amen to all of God’s promises for His glory?QuestionWhat does your name say about you?ABOUT THE AUTHORSam is an Assistant Minister with our Assyrian and Arabic churches, as well as our Fairfield English Morning Church.
