Early in Jacob’s journey toward Haran, he stops at a particular place to rest for the night. The LORD comes to Jacob in a dream in which Jacob sees the LORD standing at the top of a ladder connecting heaven and earth. The LORD promises that He will be with Jacob on his journey and to bring him back to the Promised Land. Jacob wakes from his sleep and realizes that he has been in the house of God, so he names the place Bethel. There, he sets up the stone that was at his head as a pillar and vows that he will worship the LORD as his God.
