Genesis 31 - 1000 Days of Searching the Scriptures Mountain Top Prayer Pastor Chidi Okorie Episode 1185 - SendMe Radio

Listen Later

Genesis 31 recounts a significant turning point in the story of Jacob, detailing his decision to leave his father-in-law Laban’s household and return to his homeland, guided by God’s command and promises. The chapter can be summarized as follows:

Jacob’s Decision to Leave

Jacob observes a change in Laban’s attitude toward him, which is mirrored by Laban’s sons, who accuse Jacob of taking their inheritance. God appears to Jacob, instructing him to return to the land of his fathers, assuring him of divine protection. Jacob shares this message with his wives, Rachel and Leah, recounting how Laban repeatedly deceived him, changing his wages ten times, but how God continually blessed him. Rachel and Leah agree to leave, acknowledging that their father treated them unfairly and sold them like outsiders.

Jacob’s Secret Departure

Jacob secretly gathers his family and flocks and leaves for Canaan while Laban is away shearing his sheep. Unbeknownst to Jacob, Rachel steals her father’s household gods (teraphim). After three days, Laban learns of Jacob’s departure and pursues him, catching up after seven days. However, God warns Laban in a dream not to harm Jacob or speak harshly to him.

Confrontation Between Laban and Jacob

Laban confronts Jacob, accusing him of sneaking away and stealing his gods. Jacob defends his actions, explaining his fear that Laban would have taken his wives by force. Regarding the stolen gods, Jacob declares his innocence, unaware that Rachel has hidden them. Laban searches Jacob’s camp but does not find the gods because Rachel cleverly conceals them by sitting on them and claiming she cannot rise due to her condition.

Jacob’s Reproof and Covenant

Frustrated, Jacob rebukes Laban for his mistreatment over the past twenty years, citing his hard work and integrity despite Laban’s deceit. Jacob attributes his success and protection to God, who has seen his suffering. Laban, acknowledging God’s role, proposes a covenant to ensure peace. They set up a heap of stones as a witness and swear by God not to harm each other or cross into each other’s territory with hostile intent.

Conclusion of the Chapter

The covenant is sealed with a meal, and Laban blesses his daughters and grandchildren before departing. Jacob continues his journey toward his homeland, confident in God’s guidance and protection.
