Throughout the gospels we learn that Jesus would get away often to pray by himself, but in John 17 we get an up-close look at how Jesus actually prayed. In this powerful prayer Jesus not only prayers for himself, he also prays that his glory would be revealed through the obedience of his followers and his future church.

Jesus warned his followers that living out our faith in him will be difficult, but at the same time he wants us to know that he’s got us covered!  In John 16, Jesus promised that he would send the Holy Spirit to encourage, empower and defend his followers through all the challenges of life.

Things are changing in this world and there seems to be a growing resistance to anything associated with Jesus. The important thing is that Jesus is not surprised. He knew it was coming. He warned His disciples, and He warned us too. The good news is that Jesus offers encouragement and perspective for how to respond to resistance and for how to follow Him faithfully in the midst of persecution.
