You walked in tired. Not sleepy — tired. There's a difference, and a three-day weekend isn't going to touch it.

Labor Day started in 1883 with a crowd of people in New York City saying, "We are being worked to the bone and we cannot survive this." You don't work twelve-hour days seven days a week. But you walked in this weekend saying the exact same sentence they did.

In this message, Pastor Tim opens Psalm 92 — the only psalm in all 150 written specifically for the Sabbath, and written not just to be read but to be sung. And instead of teaching about rest, we practiced it. This is a full hour of the church stopping together: writing down the season we're actually in, naming the Shepherd we actually need, declaring God's goodness out loud, singing, praying, and taking communion.

The heart of it is a comparison David makes and most of us skip right past. The wicked, he says, flourish like grass. Green, fast, everywhere — and gone by the next season. The righteous flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Palms take decades. Cedars take generations. And when the hurricane comes through, the palm is still standing.

So when you look around and the people cutting corners seem to be winning, you have two choices. Chase their pattern and burn out running a race God never entered you in. Or plant yourself, dig your roots down, and flourish for a lot longer than a season.

Don't mistake speed for strength. And don't mistake productivity for the presence of God.

Because Sabbath didn't start in Egypt — it started in Eden. Before Adam ever lifted a finger, God told him to rest, and the reason was simple: God was already working before you got here, and He'll keep working when you're gone. You are not the one holding it together.

This one is meant to be participated in, not just listened to. Get a card or open your notes app. Write the season you're in. Write the Shepherd you need. Write His goodness. Then stop.

You didn't decide one day to shrink God. You just built columns — faith over here, work over there, money, marriage, entertainment — and only one of them has His name on it. Then you wondered why God felt distant in the rooms you locked.

A nose fly lands on a sheep. It doesn't bite. It lays eggs in the sheep's nose, and the larvae travel up into its head — and the sheep, driven out of its mind by something it cannot shake loose, runs into dangerous places and beats its own skull against a tree until it kills itself.

The shepherd's answer was oil. Poured over the head, before the season ever started.

This message sits inside one verse of Psalm 23 and asks what David actually meant by "You anoint my head with oil" — and why that line lands so hard for anyone walking around with a mind that won't quiet down. Fear. Criticism. Comparison. Anxiety. Financial pressure. Unfinished conversations you keep rehearsing. Regret. Something at home nobody knows about yet.

Along the way: why the only route to the tabletop runs through the valley, why the Shepherd takes His sheep in circles instead of straight up the mountain, why He arrives at the table months early to pull the weeds and drive out what's living there, and why the most dangerous threat to a flock isn't the wolf outside it — it's two sheep inside it.

He never said the enemies would go away. He said He'd prepare a table in front of them, anoint your head, and fill your cup to the brim while they watch.

Name it. Declare it. Release it.

"He restores my soul."

We know the words. Most of us learned them young enough that we can rattle off the whole psalm forwards and backwards — which is exactly why we miss what's in it.

In this message, Pastor PJ Charles sits inside two verses of Psalm 23 and asks the uncomfortable question underneath them: if God is leading me down the right path, why does the right path run through the valley of the shadow of death?

Along the way: what restoration actually costs, the difference between being valuable and being valued, why Paul describes us as willing losers in a triumphal procession, what the Hebrew behind "valley of the shadow of death" really says, and why a seed has to be buried in the dark before it can grow toward the light.

The takeaway isn't that the darkness will pass. It's that the darkness has a purpose — and if your Shepherd led you into it, He fully intends to walk you out of it.

"Am I gonna be okay?"

America just celebrated 250 years of independence — but this week's message flips the script.

Psalm 2 opens with nations plotting to throw off a king's rule, and it sounds noble... until you realize the King they're rebelling against is God.

The truth is, most of us never announce our rebellion. We rename it.

• We rebel and call it freedom.
• We trade masters and call it independence.
• We avoid surrender and call it strength.

Nobody decides to walk away from God in one dramatic moment — it happens one skipped Sunday, one small compromise, one quiet drift at a time.

But Psalm 2 doesn't end with judgment. It ends with an invitation: "Blessed are all who take refuge in Him." The chains we've been trying to break were never chains at all — they were the arms of the Father.

The real Independence Day question isn't "Am I free?" It's "Have I surrendered to the right King?"
