Hebrews chapter 11 helps us understand what faith is through an exhaustive list of stories from the Old Testament scriptures. This gives us evidence that faith isn’t just one decision or moment in time, but rather faith is exemplified over time through our personal story.
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see”
Confidence in what we hope for means we need to engage with our mind through thinking about what God has done. This gives us the ability to trust him in the present, and for our future.
Assurance (conviction or evidence) of what we do not see means our faith becomes realized through our action. After we have thought through the evidence of God’s promise, then we must move into action in order for faith to become real.
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Faith is a journey of endurance (a marathon race, not a sprint), and therefore it is the driving force of my perseverance through the pain and suffering of life. In other words, now that I have thoughtfully considered the faithfulness of God as evidence for my faith in action, I have to maintain my focus forward on Jesus.
We first look back at what God has done to get moving, and then we look forward at Jesus to keep going.
