Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis continues to grow as more models arrive in the
local market. Today, with two sedans and three SUVs, it’s starting to make its
presence felt with 755 sales year to date, up 71.6 per cent on the same time last
year. I’ve just driven the 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol GV80 seven-seater all-wheel-
drive, which has received some worthwhile updates for the 2023 model year. The
flagship model at $108,691 with an 8-speed torque converter automatic. The GV80
oozes quality and refinement, the body feels bullet proof, superbly insulated, and
exquisitely detailed. Joining the upper echelon of motoring Genesis knew they
had to build something special and it’s loaded with luxury features and standout
quality. A worthwhile update is the integrated controller which controls the
multimedia screen, previously not user friendly as a circular touch sensing
device, now a raised dial design like the smaller GV70. The GV80 also has what
Genesis call a road preview electronic control suspension – using a forward
camera to scour the road surface ahead for undulations and potholes, it then
electronically adjusts the damping force accordingly. The previous model had a
tendency to pitch too much from side to side, thankfully for 2023 it has been
refined providing a much smoother and less figidity ride. I’m David Berthon
