In the second part of this audio series, historian Francesca Piana discusses with geneveMonde reporter David Glaser Geneva’s crucial role in the making of the tunnel. The City and Canton of Geneva played a significant role in the development of the Mont Blanc Tunnel. As early as the 1950s, they showed strong interest in the project, recognizing its potential to boost the economic and tourism networks of the Geneva region. In 1946, there was a international committee for the Mont-Blanc Tunnel in Geneva and many others after.

In 1957, when the two concessionary companies responsible for the tunnel's construction and operation were created—Société Française du Tunnel du Mont-Blanc (STMB) and Società Italiana per il Traforo del Monte Bianco (SITMB)—Geneva became a shareholder in both entities. Thus, Geneva has contributed financially and strategically to the realization and management of the Mont Blanc Tunnel, strengthening cross-border ties and facilitating exchanges between Switzerland, France, and Italy.

Francesca Piana is a historian of European and international history. Her research and teaching encompass internationalism, humanitarian aid and the mission, migration, and women/gender in 20th century Europe through a transnational, comparative, and interdisciplinary perspective.

Il est écologiste mais ne l’a pas été lors de ses jeunes années. Aujourd’hui, toute l’existence de Xavier Bengoa semble tissée de cette prise de conscience progressive, de ce questionnement inlassable sur ce qui relie l’humain au reste du monde vivant. Né aux États-Unis d’une mère grecque et d’un père basque, c’est à Genève que Xavier Bengoa a grandi, avant que son regard ne se tourne vers d’autres horizons : le Grand Nord, les forêts tropicales, les écosystèmes fragiles du Costa Rica. Partout, il a cherché à comprendre, à agir.

D’abord étudiant à l’EPFL, puis consultant auprès de diverses agences onusiennes, il s’est fait passeur entre les mondes, facilitateur entre les institutions et les réalités du terrain. À Genève, il a œuvré au sein d’ONG comme la Fondation Antenna développant des solutions low-tech pour l’accès à l’eau potable et la lutte contre la malnutrition. En Afrique du Sud, il s'est engagé au sein d'une initiative régionale s’attachant à valoriser les plantes médicinales comme levier d’action sociale et économique.

Aujourd’hui, il se consacre à plusieurs fronts : AdAstra, une start-up qui met la technologie au service de la protection de la nature, la Fédération Suisse des Entreprises pour accompagner les PME engagées dans la transition écologique, ou encore l’action politique au sein des Verts genevois.

De la traçabilité alimentaire au végétalisme, du collectif citoyen à la défense du vivant sous toutes ses formes, Xavier Bengoa prône une vision holistique du monde et de ses défis. Face aux crises climatiques, écologiques et sociales, il ne cède ni au fatalisme ni à l’inaction. Son moteur ? Un savant mélange de courage, de pragmatisme et d’espoir. Xavier vit aujourd’hui avec sa famille à Choulex.

Rencontre avec un acteur majeur du paysage genevois, pour qui penser le monde, c’est aussi le réinventer.

Alain Vaissade est une figure marquante de la vie politique et culturelle genevoise. Né en 1946, physicien de formation, il s’est d’abord illustré dans le domaine scientifique avant de s’engager pleinement en politique au sein des Verts. Il devient maire de Genève en 1995 puis à nouveau en 2000, devenant ainsi le premier maire écologiste d’une grande ville suisse.

Tout au long de sa carrière, Alain Vaissade s’est intéressé aux dynamiques organisationnelles et à la gestion de l’information, appliquant notamment le concept d’entropie pour analyser la complexité institutionnelle, notamment dans le domaine de la culture. Grand défenseur du rayonnement culturel de Genève en Suisse comme à l'international, il a œuvré pour structurer et renforcer les synergies entre les différentes institutions culturelles de la ville, des villes voisines et notamment frontalières.

Son approche scientifique l’a également conduit à s’interroger sur les enjeux de la Genève internationale. Selon lui, « la Ville de Genève a une vocation internationale par la donation d’une partie de son territoire et par sa politique culturelle, grâce à des investissements représentant 20 % de son budget. » Dans cet entretien, l’ancien maire revient sur une fonction largement tournée vers l’extérieur : après tout, Genève fait rêver à l’étranger. Il explique aussi à geneveMonde.ch ses interventions marquantes à la tribune de l’ONU et son engagement pour la culture en tant qu’élu.
