In this episode, a listener suggestion brings us back to the Cannibal subgenre as we set our sights on the works of Eli Roth. So join us as we check out his love letter to the greats of the Cannibal film and dig into The Green Inferno from 2013. Along the way we debate Eli Roth's place in the pantheon of horror directors and recount some of our favorites from his output. But before all that, we dish on some more recent watches, including Dustin finally gushing his heart out over The Substance. And so much more!
Special thanks to Elena for suggesting we check this one out. Got a movie you champion? A hidden gem you think needs more love? Just want to see more discussion on a particular film? We want to check out the movies you suggest to us. Write in at [email protected] or contact us on your favorite form of social media and shoot us a movie recommendation.

In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, continuing our tradition of having an extra episode drop on Halloween, Dustin cracks open the J-Horror Journal one last time this month to share with you three of his favorite urban legends from Japan and discuss some of the many films that have spawned from them. From a bathroom haunting ghost to a gorgeous lady with a smile to die for and finally a ritual far more elaborate than Bloody Mary and way too scary to attempt. You can expect a cavalcade of low budget horror flicks to follow in their wake as well. But before all that, we commissioned some new art for the podcast to give the J-Horror Journal its own fitting logo. All that and more!

In this episode, we tackle one more discussion topic to keep the October Halloween celebrations going. In an era where reboots and revivals are running wild, we posed a simple question: What if beloved anthology horror series Masters of Horror returned for a third season? Our parameters were simple. Assume 13 episodes because the other two seasons had that many. We each take six picks to be as even as possible and tapped Michael to give us his number one suggestion to round out number 13. The major stipulation is that each filmmaker needs to have not already appeared in the prior two seasons of the show. Watch as we wade into the trenches fighting to honor those who may have missed out on the original show's run or staking the claim of master for more modern directors. How did we do? Who did we miss? We'd love to hear your thoughts too! But before all that, we dish on more of our horror watches for the Halloween season. And so much more!

In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, picking up right where we left off, join us as we check out Yasutake Torii's Death Forest 3 from 2015, the next entry in the franchise based on an indie video game that itself was based on another prominent indie video game. Dustin eagerly dives into discovering if the third entry can continue upping the ante, or is there where it all starts falling apart? One thing is for sure: more giant floating ghost head chomping people in half is guaranteed along with series mainstay Kazuki being on hand searching for the truth. But before all that, Dustin takes a moment to highlight some upcoming J-Horror home media releases and then weighs in on the controversy surrounding Uzumaki's anime adaptation.. All that and more!

In this episode, we sit aside the movie deep dives to tackle a discussion topic in honor of the spooky season. And what better topic to discuss than the things that actually scare us. So join us as we get deep and share it all, highlighting five films that have really and truly scared us in our lives. The criteria were simple: the film had to legitimately scare us either when we first watched to the point it left some significant impact or still actually unnerves us today. And by scared, we specifically mean the type where you're still thinking about the film after. Jumpscares are fun, and we love them, but like a funhouse ride the moment is fleeting. Jason drills down on the origin of his preoccupation with child endangerment in film. Dustin unpacks his crippling fear of all things creepy crawly. But before all that, we dish on some of our October daily viewings and weigh in on Art the Clown's ascension to horror icon with Terrifier 3. And so much more!

In this special bonus episode of Genre Exposure, it's the return of Dustin's J-Horror Journal! In an effort to ensure we continue having content every week in October, Dustin has taken to the mic solo to make up for the lost time of his recent illness and do what he does best: unhinged ranting about how cool J-Horror flicks are.
Picking up right where we left off, join us as we check out Masataka Ichimi's Death Forest 2 from 2015, the next entry in the franchise based on an indie video game that itself was based on another prominent indie video game. This time we trade out the dimly lit forest for an abandoned school as the girls of the drama club find their interpersonal relationship issues pale compared to the unyielding threat of a giant floating ghost head that chomps people in half without mercy. All that and more!

In this episode, we return to our much beloved Found Footage subgenre to check out a recent indie darling that's been gaining a lot of attention online. So join us as we check out Milk & Serial (2024) from the mind of Curry Barker. Dustin eagerly embraces the film, drawing thematic parallels to some of his favorites in the subgenre. Jason offers a more reserved take while questioning the potential pretention found in marketing a movie. But before all that, we recount how we celebrated the most recent Friday the 13th and dish on some recent flicks. And so much more!

In this episode, our interests clash as Jason subjects Dustin to a film from one of his least favorite horror subgenres: Natural Horror. So join us for a thrilling tale of man versus rat as we check out George P. Cosmatos' Of Unknown Origin from 1983. Jason celebrates the varying techniques used to realize the furry invader on screen. Dustin recounts his own experience with a wild animal infestation in a desperate attempt to talk about anything other than the movie. But before all that, we hit up the theater and have returned to dish on some of the latest releases of 2024. And so much more!

In this episode, a listener suggestion leads us to tackle another legend of the Extreme Horror subgenre. So steel yourself and join us as we check out Jorg Buttgereit's Nekromantik from 1988. As we do for many of these episodes, fair warning that the film being discussed has some pretty heavy topics and themes including violence to animals. As we always say, know your limits and know what you are fine entertaining. If you'd prefer to not even hear a discussion on the film, no worries and we'll catch you next time. Otherwise, before we dig into the film, Jason hits up some recent Hollywood horror flicks and Dustin dishes on a pair of paranormal documentaries. And so much more!

In this episode, Dustin borrows a page from Jason's playbook and swings us back for a potentially forgotten gem. So join us as we check out Paul McGuigan's Push from 2009. Dustin makes the case for the film as a well-executed cult classic. Jason tries to weigh the movie against his overwhelming malaise towards superhero flicks. But before all that, we chase down a controversial Olympics year with an on theme slasher and once more take a peek behind the walls of Zak Bagans' Haunted Museum. And so much more!
