  • Soft Doesn't Mean Weak

What if the softest thing about you is actually your greatest strength?

Welcome back to Gentle But Fierce — the podcast for women who are done fighting their bodies and ready to start listening to them. I'm your host, Patty Militello, Certified Autoimmune Holistic Nutrition Specialist, herbalist, and a woman who has walked through the fire of serious illness and come out the other side with a deep conviction: you do not have to be hard to be healed.

In this episode, we are going straight to the heart of everything this podcast stands for. We're talking about what it actually means to be gentle but fierce — and why those two words belong together more than almost any others in the healing conversation.

Because here's what I know to be true: we live in a world that rewards being tough. A world that tells women — especially women who are sick, exhausted, or struggling — that if you just push harder, try more, grind longer, you'll get there. And so many of us internalize that message. We start to believe that if healing is taking this long, it must be because we're not trying hard enough. We're not disciplined enough. We're not strong enough.

But what if that's the lie that's been keeping you stuck?

In this episode, I want to blow that lie wide open, because soft doesn't mean weak. Gentle doesn't mean passive. And the woman who tends to herself with patience and compassion? She is not falling behind. She is doing the most courageous, countercultural, deeply powerful thing there is.

What We Cover in This Episode

    •  Why our culture has taught us to confuse gentleness with weakness — and how that misunderstanding is costing us our health

    •  The difference between softness as surrender and softness as strategy

    •  What "fierce" really means when you're healing from chronic illness, autoimmune disease, or nervous system dysregulation

    •  How pushing harder is often the very thing that keeps your body stuck in a stress response — and what to do instead

    •  The science behind why the nervous system needs safety, not force, to begin healing

    •  Why your gentleness with yourself is not a weakness to overcome — it is the medicine

    •  The moment I realized that everything I'd been taught about strength was backwards

    •  What it looks like to be fierce in your healing without being hard on yourself

    •  A new definition of strength — one that includes rest, boundaries, tears, and grace

    •  How to begin practicing what it means to be both soft and strong at the same time

Going Deeper — The Heart of This Episode

There's a verse that lives close to me: "Still waters run deep." I think about it often when I'm working with women who apologize for not healing faster. Women who feel like their tenderness is a liability. Women who have been told — sometimes by the very healthcare system meant to help them — that their symptoms are in their heads, their pace is too slow, their needs are too much.

I want to speak directly to that woman today. Because I have been her. After my own health crisis, I spent a long time trying to heal the hard way. Pushing through. Researching obsessively. Doing all the things. And my body kept telling me no. It wasn't until I learned to get quiet — to tend to myself the way you'd tend to a garden rather than the way you'd run a marathon — that things began to shift.

That's not a passive story. That's actually one of the fiercest things I've ever done. Because choosing gentleness in a world that worships hustle? That takes courage. Saying no to pushing through? That takes discernment. Trusting your body's timeline when everyone around you has an opinion about how long this should take? That takes profound inner strength.

Soft doesn't mean weak. It means you've learned something most people never do.

In this episode, I also begin to lay the groundwork for what we'll explore more deeply in coming episodes — the nervous system. Because so much of what keeps us stuck in cycles of illness, fatigue, and overwhelm has its roots in a dysregulated autonomic nervous system. Understanding your nervous system isn't just interesting science. It's the map that changes everything.

When your body has been through trauma — physical, emotional, relational, or all three — it learns to stay on guard. The stress response becomes the default. And no amount of willpower, discipline, or pushing through is going to override that. What will? Safety. Gentleness. Consistent, compassionate signals that tell your nervous system: you can rest now. You are okay. You are held.

That is the work of Gentle But Fierce. That is what we are building together, one episode at a time.

This Episode Is for You If...

     •  You've ever felt guilty for not healing faster

    •  You've been told to "push harder" when your body was begging you to stop

    •  You secretly wonder if your gentleness is holding you back

    •  You're exhausted by wellness culture's obsession with doing more

    •  You've been on this healing journey for a while and need permission to slow down

    •  You want to understand the science behind why rest is not laziness — it's biology

    •  You're ready to redefine what strength actually looks like in your healing journey

    •  You've been fierce in every other area of your life and need to bring that same energy into your self-care

    Memorable Moments From This Episode

"You don't have to choose between soft and strong. You were made to be both."

"The woman who tends to herself with patience isn't falling behind. She is doing the most countercultural, deeply powerful thing there is."

"Healing is not a performance. Your body doesn't need you to be impressive. It needs you to be present."

"Fierce doesn't mean loud. Fierce means committed. Fierce means I will not give up on myself, even when giving up would be so much easier."

"Still waters run deep. Don't let anyone — including yourself — mistake your gentleness for weakness. It is the most powerful thing about you."

Coming Up Next — Episode 3

Next week, we are going somewhere I have been so excited to take you: deep into the nervous system. We're going to talk about polyvagal theory — what it actually is, what it means for your body, and why understanding your autonomic states might be the single most important thing you do for your health this year.

If you've ever felt like your body is reacting in ways you can't control — the anxiety that comes out of nowhere, the exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix, the overwhelm that hits even on good days — this episode is going to give you the framework that makes sense of all of it. You do not want to miss it.

  • You Were Made For This

There's something I already believe about you — and we haven't even met yet.

    You haven't given up.

You might be exhausted. You might be frustrated. You might have tried a hundred things and still feel like your body is working against you. But you found this podcast. You pressed play. And that means something.

Welcome to Gentle But Fierce — the podcast for women navigating chronic illness, nervous system dysregulation, and the long, tender road of real healing. A place where faith meets science, where softness is celebrated as strength, and where you are never, ever asked to fight your own body again.

I'm your host, Patty — Certified Autoimmune Holistic Nutrition Specialist, herbalist, author, and stroke survivor. And in this very first episode, I'm doing something that doesn't come easily to me: I'm telling you my story.

Because before I ask you to trust me as your guide, you deserve to know who I am. How I got here. Why this work is the most important thing I have ever done — and why I believe with everything in me that healing is not only possible for you, but that you were made for it.

    In this episode, you'll hear:

🌿 The moment everything changed — my stroke, the fear, and the long road back to myself that nobody had a map for

🌿 Why conventional medicine wasn't enough — and how I began piecing together a holistic path using nutrition, herbalism, nervous system science, and faith

🌿 The birth of Gentle But Fierce — what this podcast is, who it's for, and the promise I'm making to you every single week

🌿 Why gentleness is not weakness — and how I learned that the softest approach is often the most powerful one

🌿 What's coming — a sneak peek at the conversations, tools, and healing frameworks we'll be exploring together this season

This episode is for the woman who has been told to push through — and whose body is begging her to stop. It's for the woman who is exhausted by wellness culture that demands more when she's already giving everything she has. It's for the woman who suspects there is a gentler way to heal and just needs someone to show her it's real.

Friend, it's real. I am living proof.

By the end of this episode, my prayer is that you feel less alone. That something in your body exhales just a little. That you hear these words and let them land somewhere deep:

You don't have to be loud to be powerful. You don't have to be hard to be strong.

You were made for this. You're going to be alright.
