Recently, I was thinking about the many persons I know who have still not experienced Jesus in their personal life. There could be many reasons why these persons have still not experienced Jesus in their lives. Maybe their family upbringing did not allow them to know Jesus in their lives. Maybe they were influenced by their friends who did not live the Gospel but sought different negative adventures which life offers when being away from Christ.

Whatever the reason, these persons still deserve to know Jesus and to have a personal relationship with Him. But what can I do about it? How can these persons get to know Jesus in a personal way?

The answer is simple… I am to be Jesus to them.

Every baptized Christian is to be Jesus to others. This is possible by receiving the Eucharist and / or listening to the Word of God. Obviously, this entails that we live the Gospel to the full, to depart from sin, and to follow Jesus.

‘Being Jesus to others’ will bring hope to the people, will bring comfort to the people, will help the other person to start to experience Jesus in their lives. I will try to be Jesus to the people I meet during the day… will you too try to be Jesus to others?

The book attempts to help the reader grow in his relationship with Jesus. It presents a brief introduction about the Beatitudes followed by a Chapter dedicated to each Beatitude. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The Beatitudes: The Blessings from the Sermon on the Mount’ by George Calleja. This book is about 8 different blessings from a passage in the Bible, Matthew 5: 3-10.  It is so easy to just read the bible and miss an important message that the Lord is trying to tell us. George Calleja goes into more detail of the meaning of this important passage in the bible. The book was helpful and positive. It is easy to read and understand. It makes you want to be a better person and be closer to Jesus. I definitely recommend that you read this book!

Society is composed by people having different cultures and beliefs. Society is a result of what people choose in life. Society reflects the heart of the people.

Todays’ society, especially in the western world, in my opinion is a ‘sick society’. The reason why I have formed this opinion is because in general today’s society is a society without God.

Of course, in todays’ society there are still a good number of Christians who really live up to their faith, together with other people of a different religion who truly love their neighbour. But unfortunately, there are many unbelievers and people who do not live up to their Christian faith, with the consequence of having a society without God.

The only way our society can be healed from its sickness is by returning to God. This entails that society stands up against whatever is evil that distance man from the loving Father, by saying no to the evil things, and by following Christ who will take the whole society to the loving Father.

The First Beatitude: Blessed are the poor in spirit…

Who are the poor in spirit? Why is the kingdom of heaven theirs?

The answer behind these two questions rests upon the spiritual meaning which Jesus taught during the Sermon on the Mount. The answer is not found through the literal meaning of each word, but in the spiritual, divine meaning relating to a person’s response to God’s calling. This calling of God to the human being asks of him to recognize his spiritual poverty before going to Him to be able to receive through faith the salvation He offers. This Beatitude asks of the human being to recognize that God is God.

To be poor in spirit is to recognize that you totally depend upon God; to recognize that you are nothing and God is all. To be poor in spirit is to empty oneself, that is, to become nothingness and depend totally on God. So if you happen to be a wealthy person, in a very good financial situation, in the spiritual realm you need to become nothing. You need to recognize and acclaim that although you are a wealthy person, you still depend totally on God. Your attitude should not be that of seeking to be close to God because you are wealthy, but that you grow close to God, because God is God.

On the other hand, if you happen to be a poor person, being in a difficult financial situation, you too need to become nothingness in your particular situation. You need not envy a rich person or desire to become rich. You are to accept your situation of being a poor person, and in that situation you draw close to God, not for the sake of seeking comfort from God, but because God is God.

This is the way to be poor in spirit: to become nothing, knowing that you totally depend upon God. The person who is poor in spirit, recognizes his smallness in front of God, and recognizes that God is everything in his life.

This is a challenge in today’s life as every day the Christian’s spirituality is bombarded by worldly ideas through the different social media. In the midst of all these voices, we are to recognize that we totally depend on God; we are to empty ourselves and let God penetrate our heart.

…for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Isn’t it great that people are blessed because they choose to be poor in spirit? The result of being blessed is that the kingdom of heaven is theirs. So, what is the kingdom of heaven?

The kingdom of heaven is the gift of salvation. It is the gift for all who are poor in spirit. This gift was brought to us by the loving act of Jesus… that of dying on the cross for our sins. It is precisely in front of the cross that people are to recognize their sins, to recognize that Christ is the saviour who redeemed us from our sins. It is Jesus on the cross that made it possible for us to be redeemed from our sins. We must increase our faith in what Jesus did for us through his death on the cross.

Upon recognizing our sins, our weaknesses, recognizing that Christ is the saviour… the gift of salvation is ours. It is at this point in our faith that the kingdom of heaven already becomes ours, even as from here on earth.

What is Faith all about? Is it possible in today’s world to have Faith? Many people argue that Faith is outdated, old fashioned, not for the young people and so on.

Faith can never be outdated, old fashioned and so on. Having Faith is possible. Having Faith makes a person complete, makes the person whole. A person having Faith, is a person being spiritual close to God.

Faith is based on living your life in a close relationship with Jesus Christ the Son of God. My Faith has increased over the years, because I have always sought to live this particular relationship with Jesus. Yes, reading books about Faith, listening to a talk about Faith has also contributed to increase my Faith. But for sure the most important is to have this personal relationship with Jesus, as through this relationship He has increased my Faith and made me whole.

A personal relationship with Jesus helps me to live each moment in my life through His Love, His Grace, His Peace and His Comfort amongst others. This relationship has helped me increasing my Faith, making me able to live fulfilled and not just ‘exist’.

Be encouraged, have Faith in Him, and let Him increase your Faith during every moment of your life. This is possible through your relationship with Jesus, ... by praying.

Living in today’s society brings with it various challenges for everyone. These challenges partly result from the evolvement over the years of the way people think, live and interact together. Different ideologies are widely expressed and practiced in the world. Cultures from all over the world are easily found in many countries, as people move and settle in different parts of the globe. Political views and the decisions taken by politicians also play an important part in how society develops and transforms itself through time. Society is also heavily impacted by the different ideas, beliefs, faiths and religions practiced by different groups of people, by individuals who do not always aim to live in peace, with respect, with love.

Taking a snapshot of society would produce an image revealing what people practice and believe, and especially the nature of their culture and traditions, which at times may condition their lives. Society is the result of all this. With all the good and bad intentions, the goodwill and bitterness expressed by people, society portrays an image of who the people actually are, it portrays an image of what its people are really going through, and thus, of what fabric society is made up of.

For me as a Christian, today’s society has a very distorted image of God; an image that is blurred; it is a society that has lost its focus of who God really is, while at the same time searches for another god to connect to. It is a society confused by the different ideologies brought forward and practiced by a number of people in different ways throughout the world. These ideologies are not based on the love of God, or the values which Christians try to live and nourish in their lives. In my personal opinion these ideologies tend to exclude the genuine interest of a person in one’s neighbour, and instead encourage one to focus on oneself, where greed dominates hence minimizing the possibility of true love of neighbour from being extended throughout the nations. Today’s society lacks living in the image of God, lacks unconditional love, lacks the fresh air of true life.

This book will mainly focus on man as being created on the image of God. It will try to explore and share my thoughts about what it means to live ‘In His image’. If people truly lived ‘In His image’, there is a big chance that society would be a better place to live in. Harmony and peace would be the norm, as it is meant to be according to God’s plan of love for mankind. People and nations would respect each other through reciprocal love.

I hope that this book will, in a modest and humble way, bring to you the joy, the fulfilment, the happiness that is lived by a person, whenever one understands more the beauty of living in the image of God. Living ‘In His image’ is living in His grace and peace, it is bringing and transmitting the love of God to others.

On different occasions I have heard people say… ‘How can I love God who created us?’.

Is it possible to love God who created us? Well, I think it is possible to love God who created us.

Two ways to love God who created us, is by loving our neighbour and by loving nature.

To love God, we are to let the unborn babies to live, to grow and be part of society. We are to provide food for those who are finding it difficult to have a decent meal each day. To provide a decent place for the homeless to live in. To help the drug addicts to overcome their problem and seek new pastures in their lives. Of course, there is much, much more how we can love God who created us, through loving our neighbour.

How about nature? Are we loving nature, the birds, the animals, the rivers, the sea, the land etc? Are we protecting the nature as God wanted us to? Loving nature is another way of loving God.

So yes, there are different ways how to love God. Let’s start by loving our neighbour and loving nature.

Following Jesus in my life has been the most important decision I have taken. It was a decision that I needed to take in a time when I was passing through spiritual dryness in my life. Although this spiritual dryness was a difficult time to live, it brought me closer to God… to the loving Father. After all, I was in search and seeking for the truth… ‘What is life all about?’.

Ever since I decided to follow Jesus, to commit my life to Him, to change my life, to be formed in my faith and to evangelize, Christ has always strengthened me in my faith and provided the required grace to overcome any other kind of spiritual dryness. In today’s society it is not easy to proclaim the truth and speak out about my faith and what the risen Lord has done in my life. It does not matter for me what unbelievers think about me… or for those who have a different opinion from me with regards to morality, ethics, values etc. I am a Christian and I proclaim what Christ teaches and I am not ashamed at all for following Jesus.

What is important for me is that while I continue to deepen my faith in the love of God and continue to have this personal experience with Jesus… in the same time I try to also share His love to other people. Of course, such Good News is not always well received or not received at all by certain people… but I have experienced that the Good News, after all is far more received by people.

Whenever a person decides to follow Christ, one is not to be ashamed. I am not ashamed of following Christ… and I hope that neither are you.

Who is the Holy Spirit? Some people might ask this question, especially if they do not know Jesus in a personal way. The basic answer to this question is found in John 14:16 ‘And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever’. Here Jesus is promising the Holy Spirit to His disciples. The promise is that the Holy Spirit will always be with the disciples. God will never abandon the disciples.

Jesus further reveals to them who the Holy Spirit is through John 14:26 ‘But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.’ Jesus’ promise further extends that the Holy Spirit will teach the disciples of all things God wants to express to mankind. This, in a nutshell is who the Holy Spirit is.

When the Holy Spirit was experienced by the disciples at Pentecost, in Acts 2:1-4 it is explained that ‘When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.  They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.  All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.’

The promise of Jesus to His disciples was fulfilled at Pentecost. This same promise was not only for the disciples, but for every baptised person. Today, the Holy Spirit is as ever present. The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Holy Trinity, is a mystery which one can only partly understand. It is faith in God that will help us to experience and grow closer to the Holy Spirit.
