The opening verse of Luke 15 would have been scandalous in Jesus’ world. “Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus.” In Jesus’ day there were those that were considered ‘clean’ and those that were pronounced as ‘unclean.’
The 1st-century world was a stratified system where every person on every rung knew their place in that society. Jesus comes along and redefines what purity and holiness look like. He presents a holiness that engages with society instead of one of social exclusion. We, as his followers, should do the same.
